I couldn't really see Crosby being gay at all - I just think he would've come out if he was.

Bisexual, I could maybe see, but that's because I could see that for pretty much anyone who was bisexual and not in a longterm same-sex relationship. Because honestly, it would be awkward as fuck if you were the first openly not-straight NHL player and you ended up married to a woman. I'm bi, and if I was in that position I'd wait until I was actually considering getting married to a guy (although that's only if I was the first, if someone else already came out then I'd feel a lot different).

So setting outside all the arguments upthread for why he wouldn't come out, why do you think he would have? That's very curious to me.
