Lombardi: Kings, Kopitar "not even in the ballpark" in contract negotiations:

As a fan of a team who got their stars locked up early and drama free, the Kopitar and Stamkos contract situations are interesting to follow.

I'm not a Tampa fan but I really want Stamkos locked up because of Toronto. Make the speculation stoooop.

As someone who supports neither team, I kinda want Stamkos to Toronto to happen just for the reaction. It would also be nice to see a superstar hit UFA for a change (now my teams stars are safe :P)

He could go anywhere else. Just not Toronto.

But Toronto would be maximum drama which appeals to me as an outsider

I wouldn't wish Toronto media on my worst enemy, let alone Stamkos. Dude is shy enough as it is, Toronto would eviscerate his self-image.

I don't really understand how the Canadian dollar's value affects the salary cap. Is it just that as it keeps going down, Canadian clubs' revenues go down, so the salary cap doesn't grow as much? Or am I missing something?

I find it interesting that Kopitar hasn't been locked down either. I wonder if maybe he's pushing for a longer contract and now the Kings are hesitant because of how quickly Mike Richards declined.

It's their revenue, and particularly the new Canadian tv deal that was supposed to really inflate the salary cap but isn't. The salary cap is tied to the league's revenue (in USD) and when a large portion of the revenue loses value because of the weak Canadian dollar, total revenue suffers.

Basically, Kopitar could get Toews-money, and the Kings don't have much room to argue that. But even if they wanted to pay him that, they couldn't get it under the cap.

He not only could, there's a pretty strong argument he should.

True.

Per @craigcustance:

"To follow up on @lakingsinsider report, gap in Kopitar/Kings negotiations a good couple million per season apart. Pretty significant.

Kopitar also has no interest in negotiating during the season so there's going to have to be some serious progress made in short term."

A bit more from @CraigCustance:

Kopitar also has no interest in negotiating during the season so there's going to have to be some serious progress made in short term.

This is going to be fun. I expect the Kings to re-sign him though, they kind of went through the same thing with Doughty (though RFA vs UFA is a difference).

RFA vs UFA is a huge difference and basically not comparable. RFAs have little to no leverage.

I consider it similar because they are both star players that the team would rather get this done and over with quickly so I think they will find a way to make it work even if it doesn't look good now.

I didn't mean the leverage part of it (which yeah, the power is with Kopitar in this situation).

Except there are lots of cases of high profile RFAs dragging things out (see Subban) and not so much with UFAs

I don't know if we're at the point where this can be called dragging things out, but recent star pending UFAs who didn't have a deal by September (at least from what I remember and doing some light searching of extension dates to confirm, I might have made a mistake): Suter, Parise, Rinne, Lundqvist, Kessel, and both Stamkos and Kopitar this year

It happens more with RFAs, but it still happens with UFAs.
