Yeah, dating/marrying the child of your dad's old teammate is adorable but its been done (in real life, no less).

More hilarious is dating the child of your dad's old nemesis. Did Ulf Samuelsson and Tie Domi go up against each other? Does this make Max Domi and Henrik Samuelsson hide their love from their dads? (I'm probably way off base and theyre friends)

Hypothetical future Crosby offspring/hypothetical future Giroux offspring?

Bourne had a post on his old blog where he and his then-fiancee offered the Islanders their firstborn if they paid for the wedding; I'd love to see a fic with something like that.

The idea of there being a hockey player with the hyphenated surname of Crosby-Giroux printed on the back of his jersey playing for Canada one day fills me with joy. Or an Ovechkin-Crosby who ends up representing the United States instead (plus the idea of Sid and Ovi being in-laws sounds hilarious)

Are there many notable players who ended up playing for the rival team of their dad/family member's team/team they grew up supporting?

Kasperi Kapanen's dad Sami was a Flyer, and Kasperi was drafted in Philly by Pittburgh. It was beautiful. One of the saddest aspects of the Kessel trade was that it made Flyer fans happy (or at least happier) that Kasperi was no longer a Pen ;)

Now there's just the awkwardness that Sami suffered a serious head injury (crawled back to bench) from a Darcy Tucker hit while playing against the Leafs in playoffs.

This just makes me want Kasperi/Olli fic where Kasperi brought Olli to meet the parents and Sami has to deal with having a potential Penguins son in law!

Yes, Sami was happy about the trade as it meant Kappy wouldn't be a Penguin...and then he brings home a Penguin boyfriend.

At least he's a good Finnish boy, Sami consoles himself.

It's not uncommon and it's becoming more so. It's actually the source of a lot of drama on threads about the U18s with Canadians and Americans fighting over which team the kid is going to play for.

Pierre Turgeon's son is also playing on the USA U18 team, and there's another current example there, although I can't remember who. Also Paul Stastny.

If a player has dual citizenship how do they eventually decide which national team the player should represent? Are they just allowed to choose if both teams are asking for them?

AFAIK the player gets to choose, but IIHF rules state that once you play for a country that's it, that's the NT you always play for. I know this because of Brandon Sutter, weirdly enough.

Marcus Foligno was once asked why he played for Canada and not for the USA like his brother, and he said he played for Canada because Canada invited him to camp and the USA didn't. Brett Hull has basically the same story, just with the nations switched IIRC. So sometimes that informs their decision, but if like McDavid was a duel citizen and obviously invited to both camps he would be able to play for which ever country.

Na Yeah, and I guess a lot of Canadians hold that against him in particular.

There are actually a lot of examples of this: Mike Foligno was Canadian, his older son played for the USA, then his younger son went back to Canada. Ulf Samuelsson has two kids, both of whom play for the USA and if I'm reading Wikipedia right only one of them is a duel citizen for Sweden and the U.S.

IIRC, no. Even though his dad was a francophone, Zach does not speak French. Which is a shame, really. If you can bring your kid up fully bilingual, you should. It's better for their brains.

I really want to read a fic about a second generation kid who does not want to play for a team because of bad memories relating to their dad. Like Kappy having flashbacks to watching his dad crawl to the beach when he hears that he's going to be traded to the leafs (he would have been 8 when that happened). Or a theoretical Kariya child who is visibly angry to be drafted by the Devils. A lindros child who doesn't want to play for the flyers even, since flyers medical staff tried to have Eric fly in a plane with a collapsed lung once. As well as everything else that went wrong at the end of his philly stint. I can't remember details but apparently the leafs were pursuing the college hockey playing grandchild of an old player, and some people thought that meant that the kid was more likely to sign where as others pointed out that the grandfather left the leafs under bad terms. So it might have gone either way.

I really enjoy the narrative of having to figure out how much of your parents legacy you can let effect you, and in what way. This would be a slightly different take on that.

I would read the hell out of these. I know players always say that they put away issues about growing up as a fan of a different team when you make it to NHL, but these kind of issues could be hard to get past.

Yeah, I think putting aside that you grew up as a fan of team x would be a bit different than putting aside the fact that team x fucked over/up your relative.
