Re: Player Lives and Random Gossip

Yohe said that while trying to make a case for Craig Adams, tryhard. Anyone taking it at face value is an imbecile.

As someone else pointed out, Sid is in Vail. Letang, Kessel, Hornqvist, and others still haven't shown up because no one is obligated to yet. If Geno wants to stroll into training camp 15 minutes late with Starbucks, he is fucking entitled to because he works incredibly hard.

I mean, let's not get carried away here.

I mean, didn't you ever see that In The Room clip when Dan was waiting on Geno to do review film with the team? Geno finally showed up and Dan said "It's good to see you," and Geno answered "Yes it's good to see me." Strolling in 15 minutes late is not exactly atypical Geno behavior, but I don't think it's really anything to hold against him.

I'd rather have his kind of ego, the kind that doesn't clash with Sid's and is willing to change positions and give up linemates to help the team, over some of the other more extreme egos in the league.

No, and I have zero interest in doing so? I just don't think "x player is entitled to come in late with Starbucks" sounds particularly great. "x player doesn't have to show up for every optional skate?" "x player doesn't have to do everything the 4th line grinders do to prove his worth to the team?" Yeah, sure. Teams are not made up of equal individuals in terms of hockey. But coming in late with Starbucks is not something where I'm going to be like HE DESERVES THIS.

You are an imbecile. This comment is imbecelic. No one is above working hard, or practicing for their team, especially not someone who wears an A.
Most players aren't Malkins, most players are edging into Adams territory. So what kind of example or vibe are they supposed to be getting from Malkin, strolling in late (as he habitually does), and not taking practice seriously (which by proxy means he's not taking his teammates working hard seriously)?

Honest question - do you have any reason to believe Geno doesn't take practice seriously or work hard, other than a single video in which he's late to a meeting and an article that came across a lot more as bitter journalist who's getting less access than he used to than unbiased reporting? Everything else I've seen indicates that you don't manage to be a star or even a player in the NHL without serious work ethic, regardless of talent. Especially on a team where everyone always comments on the captain's work ethic as being really stand-out, it seems unlikely habitual laziness or disrespect would fly.

There is that video of Crosby saying he's late for everything when they were leaving for the Olympics. Whether you think that's a problem or not, it's got to rankle within hockey culture.

iawtc. i kept joking to my malkin-loving friend last year that malkin wasn't at training camp because he was showing his girlfriend around pittsburgh, but the longer he didn't show up the more i suspected i was actually right. especially since no one knew what kind of injury he had.

Crosby was injured too though, was he showing his girlfriend around Pittsburgh?

Re: Player Lives and Random Gossip

That's kind of a schrodinger's question, isn't it.

It was pretty obvious he was playing hurt the first few games of the season. Not to mention he was moved to wing because of his injury- seems an odd length to go to just so you can show your girlfriend around town.

Also, this is optional skates all over again. He wasn't skating but he was still physically at training camp the whole time.

They kept Sundqvist as late as they did due to uncertainty if Malkin would be available play well into the season. Malkin was injured, many times, and came back early, many times, last season. He was praised for his pain tolerance, people who question his work ethic kind of piss me off. :/
