Re: Patrick Kane

He went for the shittiest of shitty responses too. I was expecting something disappointing but this is ridiculous.

Really, I just argggggh. I want someone to sit him down and drill into his head why this is awful and a gutpunch to every female fan of the team.

Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
I found the whole response both better and worse than the quote, do not have time to transcribe it at the moment.

Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
I'M sure his fans will find plenty of reasons why this is a totally acceptable and good comment.

Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
If this was aimed at me, I'm not a Hawks fan? Not trying to find a reason to justify his remarks, I'm just giving my impression having listened to the relevant part of the interview.

Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
It was just a general comment about his fans.

Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
da More evidence that he's the best captain ever?

Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
Well, this fan of his is beyond disgusted rn, but as a survivor, I might be biased as all hell and tbh I'm already dreading others trying to defend this truly fucked-up response. Jfc, what now, he hopes this will go away after some time passes? Yeah, this is exactly what does sadly happen all too often when it comes to rape, and also equating rape to cheating rumours, how fucked up is that? I was dreading him saying something dumb and terrible for a while now, but this is even worse.

Here, I grabbed it:
INTERVIEWER: "I did want to ask you one question about being the captain of the Blackhawks. Obviously most people are aware of a--of a situation that has been developing regarding one of your star teammates, and obviously I won't ask you to comment on anything like that, but when something like that happens during the offseason, does your focus as far as dealing with your teammates as well as the media change going into training camp as the captain of the team?"

TOEWS: "Well, yeah, and I think you just got to have confidence that things like that will resolve themselves over time and for the time being, um, you stay together as a team , you support your teammate, uh, teammate--teammates are maybe going through a rough patch, uh, we saw last year with some rumors that spread around via social media about several guys in our locker room...it's not the first time we've seen something like that."

He repeated himself about "staying together" and "supporting your teammates" after that but I was so done at that point that I'd stopped typing.

Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
Wow, comparing a rape accusation to a bunch of tabloid rumors about Sharp cheating. I set a low bar of expectations for his response, yet he still managed to limbo under it.

Re: Patrick Kane

the whole 'confidence that things like that will resolve themselves over time' really grosses me out because of the reality that a rape allegation probably will disappear for an athlete like Kane. And WTF is up with equating rape allegations to cheating rumours??

Yeah, that's really not something you want to go "oh, it'll just blow over" about, jfc.

See I think this is basically the equivalent of a "no comment". Not saying it isn't gross or a gutpunch but it's all basically hot air about TEAM which is exactly what I expected him to say. It's probably so ingrained into him and his mediaspeak that it's almost the equivalent of saying nothing at all

Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
it's so ingrained he's not at fault at all thankfully. good that we sorted that out

Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
I didn't mean that at all dude. I was just trying to say that it's a non-response response. It obviously would have been better if he'd no-commented it.

Re: Patrick Kane

It really isn't the same thing. 'No comment' is impartial. It doesn't matter if he used cliches, he made a comment that supports Kane and gives fans an excuse to support Kane. He also equated a rape allegation with infidelity rumours. Having Toews speak out in support of Kane, no matter how blandly, is hurtful and has consequences and people really need to not minimise that.

Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
da

It is really, really not equivalent to him saying nothing at all.

We all knew this is what he'd probably feel, we all know this is what most players would feel and say in the same circumstances, but it would've been nice if he could've refrained from spelling that out for us. Shut your face, Toews.

I'm not a Blackhawks fan, so maybe I'm unfamiliar with his interview style. But I think if it was more along the lines of what you're saying he'd have been more careful. More of a "I don't know any of the details. I'm just here to support the guys in the room in terms of hockey" and that would have been more neutral than his actual "oh it'll blow over, it's just like the cheating rumors stuff" response. Maybe he intended the first one and just fucked up for whatever reason, but I think you're giving him too much slack and that's why you're getting this kind of reaction.

I assume he will be more polished with his response in any case when it comes up in future interviews. Or at least I would be surprised if he truly doubles down on this.

Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
The fact is that it isn't. It's a gutpunch for feminists, intelligent fandom people, and survivors. There are large numbers of female fans of the team who think not unlike Reddit. See the responses to Kuc's tweet, some obviously from women: "Good enough for me." "Thanks for believing in him." etc etc.

Re: Patrick Kane

Come on, let me be angry for a minute while I wait for the interview to play the quote. Yes women are also awfl to other women, but right now I coulnd't care less.

Re: Patrick Kane

oh, I'm angry. I'm fucking furious. Not surprised, but disgusted. But I don't think there's any point deluding ourselves about who he's talking to and why - the innocent-until-proven-guilty types.

Re: Patrick Kane

Honestly, I got no patience to listen about how you saw it coming and how it is not a gut punch for all, but you're still angry. As a hairsplitter myself, just let me have this moment, ok?

Re: Patrick Kane

Women grow up in the same rape culture as men and also want to excuse their favorite player when he's accused of rape so they can believe it's okay to have liked him/continue liking him and won't have to deal with any moral or ethical self-reflection re: their fandom. That doesn't make this less of a gutpunch for a lot of female fans (or fans who just don't like rape and understand why rallying around the accused is awful. Even if he is magically found to be 100% "there is film and it turns out they just talked" innocent, rallying around him right now is awful).

Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
I didn't say that what he said wasn't awful. It was. I just don't think that all or possibly even the majority of female Blackhawks fans will react to it the way you and I are reacting to it.

Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
I don't consider it a gutpunch because I resigned myself to hockey bros reacting like this weeks ago.
