Well, Alex specifically talked about sending Tom away to people who could feed him. I don't think the possibility of an Andre-like person was brought up before he was introduced.
The kid issue is confusing to me, too! They have to be adopted, right? If platonic feeding is possible, would you just feed on your kid to keep them alive until they become a vampire/bond with vampire? That seems a bit uncomfortable ...
