#23 — Brown Goes Down

This is the twenty-third post of Deke Dangle RPF Anon, a community for all your ice hockey anon meme needs.

THE RULES

I've just started working my way through the fics, but the Strome/McDavid magical realism fic is great. I loved their Eichel characterization.

I really liked "a long dream on a late night", the one where McDavid and Eichel decide to pretend to be friends to get the media to stop bugging them. It's just really light and cute. And I liked that they actually talked to each other in the end, even if it took them a little while to get there.

I think that's my favorite fic so far. Actually, all of the McEichel fics are pretty great.

I enjoyed until the last scene, which felt like kind of a let-down. I just want more from my "oh, we actually like each other" reveal than that, I guess.

I'm not saying the Rask/Seguin fic is a good fic, but it's kind of refreshing to have a Stars player be a homophobic jerk when Tyler's dating a Bruin, instead of the other way around.

Obviously he's not there anymore, and the bruins feature not at all, but James Neal in the homeless!Tyler fic has always stuck in my head as a really effective teammate choice for that.

It's magical realism so by fandom's interpretation Max Domi could transform into a basic white girl. I assume that's what the fic is about.

This fic kept behaving as though Geno actually believed Sid might steal a baby without supervision. I enjoy fics that play on that baby hunger they both clearly have, but guys, the baby stealing is a joke.

I... really didn't see that at all in the story? It felt more like a long-running joke that the author thought had more mileage than it did than a serious plot about Sidney Crosby's urge to kidnap infants.

I don't get that reading. If anything, "It makes Geno stomach swoop to make the joke himself, about them doing it together" dispels it. Maybe they weren't spot on with the baby-stealing joke usage, but I never thought it was serious.

I found this one cute and I'm not normally into Eichel/McDavid, I liked how the relationship developed and the ensemble aspect with the World Cup under-23s team.

As you would never tell from the tags or the summary, this is a non-hockey AU, vaguely futuristic, dystopia setting.

I enjoyed the setting and the story. IDK anything about Lawson or Travis, so no clue how IC it is.

Now that's an unfortunate typo, is what it is.

Otherwise this didn't have a plot or really do anything, but it is is an mpreg vignette with some lactation kink, so if you're into that, you might enjoy this.

I wish this writer's beta had done a better job with spelling and grammar and noticing missing words, but I didn't notice until I re-read. On the positive side, this is a rare pair (Tavares/Strome) that I hadn't thought of and I was definitely sold on the pairing. First of many?

This was so odd, but not in ways that worked for me, unfortunately. In this world you have to get married by age 30 or you get turned into an animal (by like, the government, this is not a natural process). Alex is almost 30 and not married, and meanwhile Nicky pines.

First, the setup is SO WEIRD. Apparently it comes from a movie? And maybe it works in the movie, but in the fic it just comes across as completely nonsensical, possibly made worse by the author's attempts to explain how it works.

And second, I've read a lot of "married for convenience" fics where people get married for plot reasons, so I got really impatient with Nicky for not proposing to Alex right away. Also with Alex for not proposing to Nicky! Even if they didn't love each other, even if neither of them were gay, how is that not better than getting turned into an eagle? It felt like they were both holding back because they thought they were being noble, but dude, letting your friend's life get destroyed because you didn't want to tell him your feelings is not noble.

Very, very strange fic.

I'm torn between liking how Taylor's romantic/sexual interest develops and being frustrated with Jordan and Ryan for expecting Taylor to just notice that Jordan's been in love with him forever without bothering to tell Taylor about it. The stuff on Taylor's side of it was written with a nice, light touch, though.
