#23 — Brown Goes Down

This is the twenty-third post of Deke Dangle RPF Anon, a community for all your ice hockey anon meme needs.

THE RULES

This fic kept behaving as though Geno actually believed Sid might steal a baby without supervision. I enjoy fics that play on that baby hunger they both clearly have, but guys, the baby stealing is a joke.

Not in this case. It just makes everyone around Sid seem weird and delusional.

I... really didn't see that at all in the story? It felt more like a long-running joke that the author thought had more mileage than it did than a serious plot about Sidney Crosby's urge to kidnap infants.

Now I'm wondering what a serious fic about Crosby's urge to kidnap babies would be like. Teammates would be amused, then exasperated and then worried about leaving Sid alone with their babies; strangers would have to be given hush money after recovering their babies; and then it would end with people finally accepting that Sid has a serious problem (like women who steal newborn babies from hospitals) and that he needs serious help not people hiding/enabling for the sake of hockey.

I think I'll take the ridiculous baby-stealing fic anyday.

Your proposed serious!fic actually sounds really interesting to me, but I agree that the fic we're discussing is not that. For real though, it sounds like it would be bizarre and dark and sad, and I want every fandom I'm in to have more fics like that.

I don't get that reading. If anything, "It makes Geno stomach swoop to make the joke himself, about them doing it together" dispels it. Maybe they weren't spot on with the baby-stealing joke usage, but I never thought it was serious.

DA It just seemed like they wrote generic fanon Sid/Geno fic. Like if you were going through a list of cliches about S/G fic it seemed to hit them all, baby stealing, Sid has an artificial ice rink; concussion/Geno's knee injury.

It just didn't seem to do anything different with any of it.

Has Sid ever talked about wanting to have children soon? Or even just in general? If he has then okay, but I've never really seen any "baby hunger" in him, sure he he's great with kids and smiles around them but so do many other people who don't actually want to be parents, me included.

IIRC, he's mentioned in an interview in a vague sort of way that he'd like to have a big family with lots of kids in the house. It was when he was living with the Lemieuxs and the interviewer mentioned having their four kids around the house, and I think he said something to the effect of liking that because he grew up with a big family on his mom's side and wanting that for himself. He's also talked about having a particular soft spot for kids. But I don't think he's ever talked in a very concrete way about having children himself the way Malkin has.
