Thats! Not! Magical! Realism!

Just tag it 'Magic' if you're not 100% on the definition smh.

SO MUCH THIS.

The tag is completely ruined. If someone ever writes real magical realism I will never be able to find it.

I was so tempted to tag my last fic with "magical realism" just because then I would know that everyone else in hockey fandom would know what I meant. Probably people search on that term, even.

I didn't do it, but I'm not sure I'll have to strength to resist next time.

I don't get why this concept is so hard for people, this is like high school english level stuff and even if you just google "magic realism" it would be pretty clear that most fic tagged as it doesn't fall under the definition.

It's osmosis mostly. Plus we have had discussions on here before where people were very confused when it was explained to them what was and was not magical realism.

Everyone should have just listened to their 12th grade English teacher and this could have been avoided.

I know what magical realism is and why meme is frustrated with the misuse of the phrase, but we never discussed it in any of my English classes high school or college. Just a data point.

Yeah, i didn't get it in a high school, including ap and honors, or gen ed English classes either. I also share a certain amount of fustration because I'd enjoy more varied magic stories and there isn't usually much close to the real definition of magic realism. But I think the anons here have a way skewed view of how widely magical realism is discussed/taught/appeticiated. Maybe that's just where I'm from (greater Boston area), but still...

I didn't ever get it taught to me in a coherent way, just bits and pieces. Most of what I know about it I picked up in Spanish class, I think.

AYRT I'm from the south, so there are at least two areas where it is not taught.

Yep, it's just not focused on. Hell, we barely covered satire. All my knowledge of it had to be self-study after I started reading some books.

I think there's some kind of weird stigma against "urban fantasy", which is what most fics tagged "magical realism" in fandom actually are.

That horse has sailed. That boat has bolted. That phrase has a new meaning now. Mwa ha ha

This dates back decades. We've lost that battle.

Decades?

Three words: due South fandom.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-01 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
due South kind of is magical realism, though, isn't it? Sans the Latin America ties.

da

Yeah I don't know what the fic was like but you could make a fair case for the show itself.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-01 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
The canon is, in a vague manner.

The fic sometimes hit the note but still had the mislabeling problem of fics that weren't magical realism. The fight was had.

I have ranted about this multiple times in the past, but as other have said, the ship has sailed and fandom doesn't have another term to describe "world where weird stuff happens but it's not actual magical fantasy," particularly with the rise of the soul marks trope and related tropes. So you may be complaining about my fic in particular,, since I just used it as a tag the other day, but I honestly didn't know what tag would be more correct. That's the fandom understanding of the term now, and I think we're stuck with it.
