Part of me is kind of sad that the kitty didn't wander onto the ice at the Stars/Blues game because I'm 99% sure David Backes would have just taken it home with him.

After snuggling it for a while, yes. How many Sochi dogs did he end up taking?

Two! The dogs ultimately ended up being adopted by different people--Ryan Stepan has one and Kevin Shattenkirk's parents have the other. The really neat part about it was that there were players from several teams helping out, too. Alex Pietrangelo, Ryan Miller, Jeff Carter, and Kopitar (along with their wives/girlfriends) all helped out.

*Derek Stepan. Unless he and McDonagh got married while I wasn't looking, which is honestly not implausible in an alternate universe.

Well, if they're going to get married, then they might as well adopt a dog together. Ahem.

(But yes, I did indeed mean Derek Stepan. Thank you for the correction! Not sure how I screwed that up.)

I just assumed Derek Stephan had a brother named Ryan I'd never heard of who played on the Blues.

I had assumed it was Derek's brother too! As a Blues anon though, I thought maybe he also played for the Rangers. Or was just a non-hockey dude supporting his bro at the Olympics and representing the more animal-loving side of the family.

All of his pets are rescued animals! ❤

This reminds me that the subject of a team puppy as playoff motivation came up on reddit. And because it was reddit, this was the proposal:

Step 1: Buy the team a puppy.
Step 2: Make players take turns caring for the puppy.
Step 3: If players don't win the Stanley Cup, kill the puppy.

NGL - after about half a minute of mouth-agape horror - as a Blues fan I thought to myself, "This would be super effective on a team captained by Backes."

D-Blues-A

That would be the ultimate motivation, lol. Although I'm pretty sure if they ended up losing that Backes would just go on the run with the puppy and quit hockey altogether.

I was vaguely contemplating what crackfic about this would be like, but couldn't figure out a non-dark, non-jinxy ending but now I have found the plausible happy ending! I mean, on the lam with Stanley the pup is a happy ending to David Backes, lbr.

You could work in a network of dog-loving players from the Blues/other teams that are in on it, too! Maybe they work out some sort of puppy smuggling ring to get all the other puppies out. An even happier ending for Backes and all the puppies because no death + even more puppies.

NA I would enjoy the on the run adventures of Backes and little Stanley. As long as they made it somewhere that no one would hurt Stanley.

He has his pilot's license, so he could just fly them to safety.

How about whoever makes it into the 3 stars of the game the most gets to keep the puppy and whoever scores the cup winning goal gets to name it.

Does that mean if you don't win the Cup the puppy is homeless and nameless?

Nope, there's a puppy lottery and one of the 16 playoff teams starts with it. If your team gets to the next round, you keep the puppy. If the other team gets in, you have to hand over the puppy, and this continues until the puppy is with the cup-winning team, at which point everything proceeds as mentioned above.

It starts with who wins the President's Cup, obviously. So they have do deal with a puppy.

If the NHL had a Puppy Cup instead of the Stanley Cup (or in addition to), there would definitely be less problems growing the game.

Someone get Bettman on the phone. The existence of a puppy cup is win/win for everyone.

But there would be *so* *much* more *wank* over which puppy gets chosen (purebred? shelter?) and the idea of using puppies as prizes and, omg, making a poor puppy travel so much so early in its life, and the life expectancy of Cup puppies versus regular puppies and, like, discussion as to whether Jonathan Toews is a better captain because he kept *all* the Hawks cup puppies, but Sidney Crosby let Evgeni Malkin take the 2009 one, and then it comes out that back in the day, the Montreal Canadiens had so many cup puppies that they gave one to the guy who ran the concessions ...
