That's one of the things that DOPS looks at and you can bet whether they dismiss it or agree with it, they'll mention it in the video. It's one of the things the commentators mentioned last night. It's not out of left field to bring it up or some kind of hurr durr thing to bring up.

I was talking about dirty hits, in situations where the receiving player shouldn't have been expected to avoid it.

There's nothing that Maatta does or doesn't do that makes this any less of a terrible hit. To suggest that Maatta is at fault for Orpik purposefully targeting his head with intent to injure is bad.

Have you ever watched a DOPS video? They assess whether the other player could have avoided the hit all the time. I think in this case they'll find that the hit was too high and late for that, but it's normal and reasonable for someone who hasn't been watching it in replays from every angle to say maybe his head was down and he was leaning into it, because if it had been a clean hit, that might have been why there was head contact. in this case, that's obviously not why there was head contact. But the alternative is Barry Trotz going, yep, that's dirty.

Thanks for the condescension, that's exactly why I specified (twice!) that I was specifically talking about dirty hits. DoPS reviewing a hit to determine whether a player should reasonably have avoided contact on an otherwise clean hit =/= Trotz blaming Maatta for Orpik's attempt to injure him. Nice logic, though.

I wasn't condescending to you. I honestly couldn't tell if you'd seen one, because you're acting as if you haven't. Trotz wasn't blaming Maata for getting hit with a dirty hit, which seems to be what you think. He was speculating that maybe the hit was clean, which he can plausibly claim to think is a possibility at the time he's interviewed not having spent his time reviewing it from multiple angles in slo-mo.

DA

It's one of those things where if the hit was a moment earlier then the positioning argument could work (Forsberg on Manson in round one was an actual example of this) but he released the puck long enough before the hit so his positioning shouldn't matter. Orpik had time to adjust and not go for the head but he still did it and that's on him.
