Nah, there's definitely the idea that hockey players aren't as 'flashy' and 'showboaty' (ie not white) as other sports. Which basically boils down to them having media personalities of wet cardboard. Hockey seems less tolerant of big personalities than other sports, and people confuse boring and media trained with classy.

Yeah, but again, that's coming from inside the sport. People who aren't into the sport - especially people who aren't into any sports - don't just walk in and take that narrative as given. At least, none of the people I've known who've gotten into hockey. They all get here and go "LOL wtf."

Yeah, fair enough. I was trying to think of players in baseball that are universally thought of as classy (Mo Rivera, Ichiro, Jeter on a good day, etc.) and they don't seem to be as personality-less as most similar hockey players.

I think that's true initially -- it's not the "classiness" that's the draw, it's the wtf-ness -- but in my experience a lot of RPF fans who aren't sports fans buy into that aspect of the sport very quickly and uncritically.

Hmm I feel like I see RPF people who I'm pretty sure got into hockey college aged or older buying into the classy myth. You can see seep through when they talk about the sports the don't follow.

Haven't we debunked the myth of media training yet?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-01 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
You think they don't get media training?

Re: Fic Discussion - Deja vu

(Anonymous) 2016-05-01 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not nearly as pervasive and formal as that term implies. Media training: a couple of days. At most. Recently includes: "Don't be stupid online."

Sure, but having done media training for parts of my job, it's pretty much, here's a script, follow it. Like, every interview for individual accomplishment is:
- Credit the team.
- Cite specific other player playing well.
- Compliment opposing team.
- Cite something about upcoming schedule.
- Repeat as necessary.

And for a loss it's just the above, but in a slightly different order. Like, it may be a few days but that level of scripting isn't accidental.

NA I'm pretty sure anyone whose been watching hockey for a decent amount of time could give a passable post-game interview. Just throw in a few, we need to play our game/we just kept playing our game and mention getting pucks on net and you're good to go.

Now I wanna write fic that's 5 things Connor McDavid never said in a post game interview and one he did.

My favourite dumb bit is to mimic the interview with the tv on mute.

na

"Why do you think you lost today?" "Well the other team got more points than us." "What's your plan going forward?" "I think we're really work on...scoring more points than the other team. Also good fundamentals."

I'm loving letterkenny's parodies on hockey interviews.

I don't think anyone is implying they do presidential debate style prep, it doesn't take that long to give people a basic script and tell them to stick to it.

I want one of them to 'debate' Trudeau now.

SA
I'm imagining a system in which the Canadian prime minister gets prima nocta with the number one overall draft pick, and the reason McDavid is so salty about the draft is because he didn't get Trudeau.

No kink shame, but I don't want to imagine that at all.

I'm glad to link to that video with Giroux and others again where they say they don't get any or only minimal media training, lol. I mean, they could have lied, but why.

Yes, and people also see every "good" thing hockey players do as "evidence" of the sport's moral superiority. The r/hockey threads and comment sections every time a hockey player visits a children's hospital, good lord.
