It's both? The white people in question don't like sports, and there's also subconscious racism, so when they finally try a sport/sports fandom, they gravitate towards white sports/white players because it feels more familiar. I absolutely did this myself, I know, so I'm not dragging anybody here, just trying to be aware of it.. And conversely, look at how tickled hockey Twitter was that a cool black guy got into the Blues this week. "Look! Black people like us too!"

Are we still talking about RPF fandom here? Because I'm pretty sure most people here didn't go "I feel like watching a sport, which shall I try?" They went to the sport that already had all the fic.

But there has to be a reason that sport had all the fic in the first place. Someone has to produce all the fic. And not all small fandoms grow like that.

Well, having impertinence and her crew, then thefourthvine and thehoyden, as well as svmadelyn, didn't hurt.

Right, but the question is why they would be drawn to hockey rpf in the first place. It's circular reasoning, you can't explain hockey rpf having the most fic by the fact that hockey rpf has the most fic.

When your initial sample size is that small, you've gotten to the point where making generalizations is pointless.

I'm not generalizing at all? I'm questioning the circular logic of explaining why there's lots of hockey rpf fic by saying that writers just gravitated towards the fandom where there was a lot of fic already.

NA I think one factor may be the kick hockey gets every 4 years with the Olympics. A lot of people who are generally not sports fans still watch the Olympics. There was a growth spurt in 2010 and I seem to recall one in 2014, too. It reminds me of how I always see more ice skating fannish stuff around Olympic years, too.

Yeah, and ditto about not dragging anybody else. I feel like this topic gets a lot of people defensive, but in my experience, most people talking about liking hockey because of its whiteness are talking from a place of self-examination. Like, we're all in this fandom, too, who among us could say "liking hockey is problematic and means you're racist"? But I can see how certain values I've been socially conditioned to have are racially coded and influence the things I'm interested in. I can see how race influences which players I gravitate towards for fic. And even though I recognize these things, just my being aware of it doesn't fix the problem. If that's not where you're coming from, that's great! But for those of us for whom it's true, it's useful to talk about, and might spark similar awareness in other people as well.

For real we are all here following the sport of hockey to some degree, when people talk about this its often from a spot of self-criticism/awareness.

Yeah, I was trying to stave off defensiveness myself, because it's my own history I'm tracking, too. I finally got into a sport and it's baseball, I got interested in an athlete without knowing he was multiracial because he passes, I ended up over in hockey fandom shipping the whitest white boys I have ever shipped, and I'm trying to examine that with regards to myself as much as anyone else. And do better in the future, obviously, especially wrt to being more preemptively thoughtful about what I ship and what people/characters I get interested in.

Yeah, I think with Lincecum (who I think you're referring to), it's also that his dad is white and his mom split early, most people don't know he's Filipino and I'm not sure how much he IDs as Filipino. Which is different from being, say, Carey Price and 'white passing.' (Or even Oshie and white passing, but being close with his grandfather.)

Re: Fic Discussion - Deja vu

(Anonymous) 2016-05-01 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
He's not very comfortable with being IDed as Filipino, no, and it isn't in the media much. I still felt kind of dumb for not knowing even though I'd vaguely been paying attention to him for years.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-01 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I assume that's because he's really close to his dad and his relationship with his mom isn't great, AFAIK, so no need to worry about it. It's different than say, not knowing that Price is First Nations.

Yeah, I now know a LOT about him, and the whole background is kind of sad (ntm his current situation).
