I think one factor is also that hockey and soccer are more of an international thing. I know people have said hockey isn't as mainstream as other sports in North America, but outside that those "popular American sports" really don't have much presence at all. So I think part of it is also that hockey is more popular or at least more known in Europe for example than basketball/baseball/American football.

Baseball is pretty international, albeit, not in Europe.

Yeah I was going to add this. (And I'm annoyed that the lack of European popularity does hurt its rep in that regard with the IOC and such.)

Lol, there was a giant thread on ffa once about how baseball must be an American only thing because ... reasons, despite the fact that there are many many leagues in Japan and Korea (and I think China), as well as throughout Latin America. Like, Ichiro did not spring fully formed from the head of Cal Ripkin.

Ah, I remember that thread. Good times.

yeah, I remembered that at the end of my comment there, should have specified it at the beginning, too, sorry.

No worries. This is def. a pet peeve of mine, considering how ffa likes to claim baseball is US only.

Apart from the fact I love ice skating, this was a huge thing from me (I'm from the UK). I know nothing about baseball and American Football but ice hockey has sort of similar rules to regular hockey. It helped I already knew what the purpose was to hockey (to put the puck in the net) while American Football I'm still lost, despite who knows how many TV shows feature it (do you put the ball over a line? Do you run with the ball for a certain distance? Does it work if you kick it?).

Haha, your thoughts on American football are my thoughts on it. :D I've seen movies featuring it and I've watched the super bowl, but I'm still just as confused, lol.

Grew up in Canada literally playing non-tackle football in gym class and I'm iffy on the rules.

Re: Fic Discussion - Deja vu

(Anonymous) 2016-05-01 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but, nonnie, I have no clue how you even score. The purpose is to get more points than the other team, but how do you score points?! All those high school movies have been spectacularly unhelpful on this because they think everyone knows it, even people who don't care about American football.

Haha, I know. And like... sometimes you kick the ball, but sometimes you don't, and there's throwing and running and sometimes there's points, but for what I'm not clear on. And all these position names, oh boy...

Getting it over the line and then sometimes something involving kicking ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ , seriously couldn't even tell you how much points each thing is worth and why you get to kick it sometimes.

Re: Fic Discussion - Deja vu

(Anonymous) 2016-05-01 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
You get to the end zone (the zone at each end of the field) with the ball, either through throwing or carrying (6 points plus either one or two more points depending on the follow up, but generally one more), or through kicking the ball through the field goal (big U-shaped goal) (3 points).

Offense and defense from the same team don't occupy the field at the same time, so generally one side is on attack while the other is on defense. There are a lot of position names, but generally you just need to know quarterback (guy generally throwing or carrying the ball on offense), running back (guy carrying the ball on offense) or wide receiver (guy catching the ball on offense).

The rest of the guys are mostly 'line' guys, so involved in hitting the other team, either on offense or on defense. There are other positions (tight end, kicker, strong safety, etc.) but mostly it's gonna be quarterbacks, running backs, or wide receivers handling the ball.

Like hockey and baseball (and most other sports), it gets complicated quickly, and American football isn't continuous play the way hockey and soccer are, but also not as modular as baseball.

It amuses me that football is so complicated that no one can understand the rules, and yet has the reputation for being "dumb" and not intellectual and not a sport that smart, cultured people like.

(I say this as someone who was extremely loudmouthed in high school about my sports being ~superior to football, then later in life actually learned how football works and found it extremely rewarding, in the same way being able to see and understand hockey plays is rewarding.)

Thanks, nonny, but even that short explanation was confusing. I guess I'm destined not to know much about American football.

Maybe if they put them in skates and put them on ice, I'll be a bit more interested.

I've tried to understand this comment, but it went right over my head. I would probably have to go to games with someone who understands it a few times to actually get it (if they're willing to explain things to me constantly).

Thank you though, nonny!

Honestly it's kind of like hockey but much more discrete rather than continuous? It might be a thing where you need someone who understands it in the room with you introducing you to things as they're happening though.

I come from one of the most football-obsessed cities in the US and I'm still fuzzy about the details. Sometimes there are four downs and sometimes there are fewer and I am still honestly not sure what a down is? Sometimes you kick the pointy thing and it is worth maybe three points? Sometimes I think you can get a single point but I don't know how or why? It's a very confusing sport.

Re: Fic Discussion - Deja vu

(Anonymous) 2016-05-01 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a very confusing sport.

You're telling me. What even is a down? What is the quarterback's job? I know the running back has something to do with running but to where? Who knows?

Apparently the quarterback is the star player? That seems to be what the popular guy is in movies anyway.

Re: Fic Discussion - Deja vu

(Anonymous) 2016-05-01 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Quarterback is more important than the halfback or fullback. He's the guy who's going to be in the center of the play.

Re: Fic Discussion - Deja vu

(Anonymous) 2016-05-01 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
A down I sort of understand. Basically you get four attempts (downs) to move the football 10 yards. If you don't succeed in that I think you have to do something sort of face off like?

Re: Fic Discussion - Deja vu

(Anonymous) 2016-05-01 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
There are four downs, always, but one down can sometimes be a field goal attempt or a punt return. A down is a gain of 10 yard. You have four attempts to gain at least 10 yards.

If you do a field goal attempt as your 4th down, it's 3 points. If you kick for an extra point after a touch down, it's 1 point.

If you can understand hybrid icing, football's pretty easy.

Re: Fic Discussion - Deja vu

(Anonymous) 2016-05-01 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"10 yard" but how much is that in meters? Haha, that's probably one of my problems too, I have no idea about US measurements.
