#23 — Brown Goes Down

This is the twenty-third post of Deke Dangle RPF Anon, a community for all your ice hockey anon meme needs.

THE RULES

FYI meme hating on Brandon Sutter (and hating on downjune's writing of Brandon Sutter as if he were a good player for us AS WELL AS her characterization of him and others) was not total, I will give you that. Because meme is never 100% in agreement on anything, duh.

But there was definitely way, way more than one of us. A large percentage of the people in those conversations actually. Just like there has been more than one of us complaining about her horrible Flower characterization, as the anon elsewhere mentioned.

I can honestly say I know nothing about downjune as a human and don't even know if she has a twitter or tumblr, which are the only spaces where I interact with this fandom outside of this meme, so no, I promise I'm not her friend. (Are we bringing back the "author's best buddy" meme here?)

But I just checked to make sure, and downjune hasn't written about Brandon Sutter in a YEAR, which is why I find the continued harping on that to be so fucking weird. As someone who came to her work for the Sid/Claude stuff (and who isn't a Pens fan), I don't know anything about those stories or the Flower ones, and I don't really care about them. But we're talking about her more recent Sid/Claude work in this thread, and continuing to bring up year-old grievances that have nothing to do with that is just kind of sad.

Kind of sad? Discussing - in the fic discussion thread, mind you - the flaws in an author's body of work to show how those flaws continue to exist is kind of sad now? lmao get out of here. If you're not her friend, then you're just an idiot. Now that's sad.

No, there was not some kind of majority agreement criticizing the way she writes Brandon Sutter. There was a fair bit of criticism of how her Sutter series was paced, but that was separate from any opinion of him as a player.

And you say all this as though there aren't lots of people on meme that also really like a lot of her stuff. A number of people have praised her Sid/Giroux stuff very highly, for example. Discussion of her fic has been far from uniformly negative.

Can someone with a dreamwidth account do a meme search for "Jesse Marshall". He's the one specific thing I remember from that thread where people were absolutely praying for Sutter to get traded.

I want someone to find it so I can show these liars that yes, several people were outright mocking downjune for continuing to write him as some kind of indispensable cog thus making it obvious she knew nothing whatsoever about hockey.

Meme's not a paid account, so you can't do searches. And I'm not sure what you even want to prove here. That some nonnies dislike her and have talked about it in the past? I don't really think anyone was contesting that, so much as the idea that "meme" hates her. I'm pretty sure the only person meme would agree to hate as a collective is Gary Bettman.

Because to me that's the question at stake. Some anon is saying it's just one person with a grudge when hello. It's clearly not.

No one is saying there was no one hating on the Sutter fics a year ago. The grudge accusation comes from people who apparently still can't let it go, 9 months after the guy was traded.

I'd say that there are probably several nonnies who dislike her fic and have talked about it on meme before, but based on this thread, there also seem to be several that like her stuff, too. I'd also say that you (and perhaps one or two other nonnies, who knows) are being weirdly over aggressive about this whole thing.

tbf the only reason that people have praised her Crosby/Giroux stuff is because the quality of the rest of the fic for that pairing has been mostly crap. That doesn't mean downjune's stuff has become great. It's still average. I just like it better than the twitcrew messes.

But again, this Ryanne fic is reminding me of why I was turned off her Pens-centric stuff.
