The concept of repeat offender/how the league takes previous supplementary discipline into account could also use some retooling, given how wildly DoPS's standards have fluctuated over the years. For example, Kris Letang had a suspension history before this series, and Tom Wilson didn't, which factored into their respective punishments. But Letang's prior suspension was a 2-game regular season suspension for boarding just after Shanahan starting running DoPS and handing suspensions out right and left. If those same standards were being currently enforced, no way Wilson enters this playoffs without repeat offender status.

Repeat offender status only accumulates for 18 months. Kris Letang does not have repeat offender status.

The only time I know of that the DoPS went around that is Raffi Torres's 40-game suspension where they brought up stuff from the past several years to show how similar they all were and how little his style had changed.

That's not how this works! That's not how any of this works!!!

The 18 month things only applies to how it affects fines. When it comes to length of suspension, they consider their entire history.

Wasn't this just discussed and explained on meme like two days ago wrt the Orpik suspension, lol?

It comes up in almost every discussion of every suspension everywhere on the internet, sometimes multiple times per discussion, and despite the fact that it gets corrected every time, it just keeps spreading. It honestly drives me up the wall, although it does have some usefulness in determining whose opinions and arguments you can just ignore.

I thought that they could consider it, but not call them "repeat offenders."

Probably, but no one called Letang a "repeat offender," they just said his history had been taken into account. It was only a-ayrt-rt who made that leap and clearly confused the two (18-month "repeat offender" vs. player with history of supplementary discipline).

No, that comment didn't equate them, although it probably wouldn't have been clear to anyone who didn't already know the distinction.

And the person who replied to it was clearly confused on their own if they thought Torres' suspension was the only one where history had been taken into account.

Is this where I get to snidely ask if you've ever seen a DoPS video? The video on Letang's suspension explicitly states that his prior suspension is being into account in the punishment. The CBA explicitly also states that a player's history, specifically defined as previous supplementary discipline handed out, is taken into account (separately from the 18-month "repeat offender" status used to determine fines).

Or you could just politely correct them. Or you could observe that someone else already has, also without being snide.
