Drink from the Mon on a bad day and find out.

Those are probably unlikely, but then again, so were the mumps.

At least the Ducks are out of the playoffs, so there is little chance of them spreading another historic contagion. #tbt #diseasestyle

Well, and I think the reality is that the measles and mumps outbreaks are related to the southern California anti-vaxxers, who, given that their kids are getting these diseases, will hopefully get their kids vaccinated and these kinds of outbreaks will go the hell away. #vaccinateyourfuckingkids #becauseitsthecup

That combination of hashtags is making me laugh... especially because SoCal can't have much investment in the cup nowadays :P

There's actually a bunch of SoCal Sharks fans! I was really surprised when I found out that every person I knew who was at all into hockey was a Sharks fan, minus the one Kings fan. So there is some investment there. /other SoCal anon

Haha, that doesn't surprise me at all! It was more meant to be a playful dig at the Ducks and Kings :P

Hah, I figured, but I couldn't let the opportunity to voice my amazement go by! It's just so weird. By territory we should be Ducks fans. Or it would make a certain amount of sense to be Kings fans as they're also super close and have had recent success. But nope, everyone I meet is a Sharks fan. We're all hockey hipsters.

I'm from San Diego, which I'm told is Ducks territory, and while I'm sure there are plenty of Ducks fans there (I haven't lived there since I started watching hockey), my natural dislike of LA and Orange County makes me unable to like any of the sports teams there, even if they are geographically closest.

1) The worst outbreaks in the US the last few years have been in the NE, not the SW.

2) People can overlook it, because it doesn't fit their narrative or whatever, but the mumps started with the Blues, specifically Jori Lehtera, not the Ducks.

All the reporting I saw around the time implicated the Ducks, so if it did start with Lehtera it isn't people people overlooking it to fit the narrative, it's a result of inaccurate information having been spread. Much like the mumps.

You know, I always thought it started with the Wild. Or were they just the team most affected by the mumps?

I think the Wild may have been the most affected, but also maybe the team that spread it to the most other teams, which is why they might have gotten a lot of initial attention (and then from there traced back to the Ducks and Blues). Eventually it came out that some Blues players had tested positive/had mumps-like symptoms in mid-October, but the team never confirmed it.

It's not crazy to for someone to speculate the Ducks could have been the root of it, like, I doubt anyone is super invested to spinning a ~narrative that is purposefully overlooking the true culprits of mumps!! Orange County is notorious for the amount of vaccine refusals, which was in the news at around the same time because there was a measles outbreak at Disneyland just shortly after the NHL mumps outbreak.

This article has a pretty good timeline of how the mumps probably spread: http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/id/33596/tracking-down-where-the-nhl-mumps-outbreak-started

That's the best timeline I've seen. I like that they included the refs. Thanks for linking!
