It's southern from a hockey standpoint because the Canadian media is full of blowhards who clutch their pearls at the thought that a team that isn't either on the north side of the 49th parallel or in the far northeastern sector of the United States could do well, let alone survive, and any region that isn't a part of those areas is automatically southern (see: how Canadian media refers to fucking CBJ as a southern team all the time).

From an American geopolitical standpoint, however, it's not. I don't know why that's so hard to grasp. The states that are now considered southern states were established before American settlers reached California, which was the first area on the Pacific coast to have an influx of settlers, which is why California is basically the Western state in American minds. It's not that hard to understand.

I'm an American, and we're not talking geopolitics here. California is on the west coast, but it's also in the southwest and a southern state. There's probably a million examples of people referring to it that way all the time in casual speech or even the news.

Literally no one besides maybe people from a state directly north of California refer to it as a southern state. Come on. I'll give you southwest, but even then, that's more West Texas/Arizona/New Mexico than California.

Idk, I wouldn't blink if anyone called California southern and I live in it.

What's hard to understand is why anyone thinks this thread was talking about the latter when OP was clearly referencing the former.

The former was actually pointed out very quickly, but after that people acted like it was totally absurd and illogical for anyone to claim that California and Missouri weren't southern states, and no one likes being told they're dumb for adhering to common usage, especially when it comes to something like regional/geopolitical identity.

Did anyone call anyone else dumb? I'm paging back through the comments now, but while I do see some weird hostility, it all seems to be people incredulous that others don't 100% see things the way they do. (Which is an accurate description of at least half our wanks, now that I think about it.)

This has been the most civil of discussions in the past few days.

Not outright, but the "???" and especially the "LMAO" comments easily come off that way. And yes, I think you've hit the root cause of this wank and most wanks on meme.
