It is uniquely frustrating to hear that when you are a fan of the thing, yeah. It feels really personal. "Your enjoyment of this thing is obnoxious to me."

And it's not just hockey; I saw some of that when Mad Max: Fury Road first came out. "It's so over-hyped that I already hate it and I haven't even seen it." Like, damn, sorry people like something and are excited about it? Sorry you're such a hipster you can't like something if other people already do?

It probably makes more sense for hockey teams if you go in multi-team spaces like reddit, maybe. But usually people don't specify that.

I mean unlike that Mad Max example these people presumably have seen the Penguins play before settling on their hatred lol.

I'd say a lot of hockey fans frequent multi-team spaces, though. Even if you don't go on Reddit, there are annoying fans of *insert team* to be found on Twitter, Tumblr, here on meme, or even in person if you attend games. Or you could know obnoxious fans IRL.

Yeah, it's extremely difficult to "stay in your lane" as a hockey fan (and those who do exclusively are not even a little common). 75% of why I hate the Stars is because of tumblr. DYK that Tampa fans irl are kind of dicks? Etc.

Do they all have teams they hate based on that team's fans, though? I'm on meme and on Tumblr, and I don't have any. Maybe it says more about the people who hate teams based on their fans than it does about those fans.

Probably not, but there are some people who don't hate any teams for any reason, so I'd say people just have different levels of investment and what does and doesn't annoy them. But yes, continue to think that just because you don't hate any teams for that reason and are therefore above it all that it must mean there's something wrong or suspect about people who do.

I'm pretty damn invested, so no, I don't think that's it.

da

I'm an anon who complained about my Pens friends a few weeks back, and I think Twitter is the worst for this. You get all the live tweeting of games (Caps-Pens has been unbearable, half my tl has the other half muted), plus RTing of bragging or complaining tweets from beats or other fans. It's like being on a mailing list for a fandom you didn't sign up for.

Why do I have so many Pens friends? I have no clue. I think I got into hockey Twitter in the offseason and people would add me or be friends of friends and I'd add them back, so my fandom circle is very multi-team now. In the meantime I've come to like a lot of people personally but their fandom annoys me.

Muting is very sensible and everyone should consider it in these circumstances. I've definitely muted a few people for the playoffs so I can return to them still friendly in the summer.

Oh yeah, I'm all for people muting me on Twitter or turning off my retweets ir I get to be too much (as I also do with them). I retweet tons of team-related stuff just because it makes me happy. My Twitter has been all hockey and my team since I joined, though, so I kind of feel like if you follow me, you should have known what you were getting into.

Meanwhile I have some friends whose team is now out of the playoffs so they're turning to baseball, so there's definitely been some muting on that front.

This is the difficulty with locked Twitter! I have no idea what I'm getting into when I follow back someone my mutuals vouch for, or whose name I've seen in tweet threads. I can't even see locked bios so there's no way to know what teams they follow or how they do fandom until you're already following them.

For sure. And then I always feel awkward unfollowing again! I have a couple of times, because I'm just like, whoa, this is never going to work, but I have a bunch I followed and then almost immediately muted because I don't mind livetweeting games with them, but can't deal with their day to day tweets.

The worst is the porn, though. When two or three people on my TL get into talking, like, position logistics and angle of penetration, I just cannot. I do not care that much about dicks.
