#23 — Brown Goes Down

Montreal is now stuck with Therrien forever. Unless Hartley is still available in a year, I guess.

Therrien is like an evil spirit who just won't leave, can't wait for him to ruin a decent team yet another year...

Not forever. Therrien isn't immortal. (I think.)

I'm not a Habs fan myself, so I mostly get info on the situation from my dash. Does it seem like Therrien has lost the room? I've heard various things about his bad coaching and lineup decisions, but do you think the players still buy into it to any extent?

It's not about Therrien. It's about who they would replace him with. Guy Boucher was the leading guess, but now he's off the market, and they've been through most of the other French-speaking NHL-level coaches.

I feel like he and his decisions have to be unpopular with some of them at the very least, like Subban for example. So at best the room is split? Which does not make for a great atmosphere either.

He's a very divisive figure for the locker room, on top of being a terrible coach.

I know some of the ex-Canadiens have said that he was just never happy with them, and they could never get from his criticisms an idea of what would make him happy, and so it just became very demoralizing for them. And I feel like the public criticism we've seen from him of players like Galchenyuk and Subban probably bears out that his like or dislike doesn't seem to be tied in any reasonable way to how players are actually playing.

Yeah, he has a 'type' of player that he likes that goes with the kinds of players Bergevin likes: grinders, 'grit' players, established guys as opposed to new/young players. And if he doesn't like a guy, he's never going to give them a chance unless forced, like he was with Galchenyuk (and, if my memory serves, with Subban, back in '12-13 or so).

My hate for Therrien is more immediate, but damn would I love for Bergevin to get fired too.
