There is actually a part addressing the age thing later on in the story. Can't fault you if you didn't make it that far.

Oh dear, I went back for a closer look, and if you mean the conversation Danny and Claude have about 2/3 of the way through, it actually kind of makes the skeevy implications worse for me D: Or at least shines more of a spotlight on them because of Danny's defensiveness and hairsplitting. I mean, they were still bonded, married, cohabiting and coparenting when Claude was 18, and the fact that Danny patiently waited "nearly a year" while Claude "got used to" him before giving in and boning him when he was 19 doesn't help and really just gives it an extra flavor of stockholming/grooming, especially against the backdrop of 50k of an even younger (admittedly not by much, but still) Claude being basically re-stockholmed into the whole love/marriage/baby carriage shebang.

I mean, I don't have a problem with age difference and teenagers getting married per se, but this was just kind of a weirdly handled and unnecessary detail. It would have been basically the exact same story if the author had stuck closer to the RL timeline, in which Danny didn't join the Flyers until a year later and Claude didn't move in until way later. I still wouldn't have loved the de-aging thing, but it wouldn't have had the extra sheen of skeeviness in that case.

I wouldn't really call it stockholm or anything like that, as Claude chooses to go with Danny and could leave at any time, but the combination of age + soulbond + predetermination (Claude knows they end up happily married) does make it kind of weird. I liked it a lot on first read-through, but I think a lot of the skeeviness could have been eliminated if you just change one of those three factors.

Do you normally enjoy soulbond fic, especially when there's 24/7 psychic telepathy involved? I do think the author's focus on the age difference gave it kind of a weirdness, but not having had Claude move in when they bonded and they're reading each other's minds and emotions, and this has happened to them both without either one choosing it, strikes me equally as weird, and I was wondering if you're one of those people that finds soulbonds skeevy in general?

I actually think it would have been less skeevy if the age difference had not been mentioned at all, and they'd either just got right on with the physical side and the complication was building the familial relationship or else if they'd both wanted to wait, rather than the author having them wait and then not wanting to make it sound like either of them found the other unattractive, so introducing the age objection on Danny's part.

I found the focus on the age difference when they first bonded, rather than Danny having three kids already whom Claude essentially might become a step-dad to at an age where most people not have even one child and might not even have thought about having a family in the near future really weird.

I agree. Especially since in the end, the fic sort of ends on that note of Claude & the kids it would have made more sense for that to be the focus. But during the actual fic they mostly took a backseat to the other storyline.

Nope, I like them just fine, and I'm also fine with two soulbonded people instantly moving in, struggling with the predestination/do I really want this aspects, and so on. It was just the context and the handling of the age stuff, the three young insta-stepkids and the way Danny talked about it all that made it creepy to me. I mean, even if you have to keep the moving in right away bit, you could still lessen the creepiness by simply having the soulbond start later (like I said, they probably didn't meet in real life until at least a year later, so you kind of have to wonder why the bond in the story has to happen as early as the author could possibly push it back without going full underage) and maybe not de-aging the guy all the way back to a teenager with his brand-new lover's poster on his childhood bedroom wall, or something. As it is, it's basically The Time Traveler's Wife, and that's weird because it didn't actually have to be.

I agree re: the weirdness of the fic but I'm mostly commenting to say that your comment made me go take another look at The Time Traveler's Wife to see if it's as creepy as I remember it being and HOLY SHIT it is actually even creepier and, worse, more explicitly so than it was in my memories. Like, I remembered the grooming stuff and the pregnancy fuckery but had apparently either not noticed or scrubbed away shit like all the "totes not a pedo rapist!!!" protestations and the fact that they boned literally the instant she turned eighteen (and he was FORTY-ONE!!!!!). Plus there was a fuckton of gross gender role stuff that I sort of noticed but didn't completely grasp the first time around but this time it was a glaring neon sign and made me want to vomit.

But the actual worst part is that I got sucked in despite myself, kept reading and cried all over again about the ending. Fuck you, book >>>>>:(

I finished TTW on an airplane on the way home from Hawaii. I cried so hard the flight attendant stopped to make sure I was ok.

It was embarrassing.
