#23 — Brown Goes Down

This is the twenty-third post of Deke Dangle RPF Anon, a community for all your ice hockey anon meme needs.

THE RULES

Well, yeah, but having one character, your fave, who is Aware and Above it All is not a great middle ground between realistic and wish fulfillment, IMO.

The way Claude was portrayed in the first part made me so upset I had to quit reading, even though this is one of my fave pairings and I loved the author's other stories for them.

It made me so upset that I couldn't stop reading, lol. I usually like this pairing, too, but I like Claude more, so the whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth.

And I can definitely understand not being able to read through all of it! I'm sorry it was so frustrating that you couldn't enjoy it either, especially since it's a pairing you love from an author you love :(

downjune's Sid fics are basically just Gary Stu fics in disguise and always have been.

Then she takes another player and creates this insane characterization of him (Flower, Tanger, now Claude) and congratulates herself for paying attention to characters no one in Pens fandom writes or cares about.

How anybody thinks she's a good author is actually beyond me.

My two favorite fics of hers aren't even about Sid. I think she's a wonderful writer with more of a range than you're claiming.

She has Crosby fixation issues, and delusions about how good a writer she is, and if you think her writing is 'wonderful' then I think you're a moron. Sorry not sorry.

You think the Sid/Flower soulmate fic is about Sid? And the Sid/Brandon Christmas fic? Just two, off the top of my head. Just because he's in them doesn't mean they're about him.

And yeah, the fact that she has realistic (ie, non-fantasy) future fic and a canon-divergence high school AU and a cyberpunk-ish fic and a series with magic with religious overtones and a different series with team telepathy/soulbonding - yeah, I'd say that's some range.

......I think if someone includes a player as one half of the pairing, it's about that player on some level. But you're somewhat right. Often Sid is her Gary Stu so the fic can't be "about" him when she's totally idealized him and is out of touch with Crosby in real life. The fics are more "about" the second half of the pairing, which surprise surprise! she also seems to know nothing about and turns them into crazy people. She could be writing about anyone, for all her characterizations have to do with the players she's picked. That's not range. I don't care if you think the ability to write both future fic and high school AU makes someone talented. Which. What?

Writing in a bunch of different genres? Yes, that is the definition of range. Not really sure what definition you're using.

I also wonder what you think good characterization looks like. Perhaps you would like to provide some examples.

I would say executing them well, with good, individualized characterization and world building, counts towards range than her writing however many different tropes. None of them are really in different genres, so to speak.

DA - Have you considered stopping reading her fic?

You obviously hate it, and yet you seem to have read all of it. Block her on AO3 don't read any exchanges in which she is taking part until after reveals I think it might be for the best.

With how weirdly hostile some people on here can be about Brandon Sutter, it makes me think some of the downjune hate is just because she likes him.

I remember when he got traded and I made some remark about it pleasing the Brandon Sutter hater, I was then immediately corrected that there are many Sutter haters! Not just one! I must have mashed them all up into one person because of how similar they are in being weirdly hostile at a guy just trying his best. imo anyway.

I don't care about the Pens at all, that one incident just sticks in my brain about how strange they can be sometimes.

Sorry, that was a digression. I've never actually read her fic so I don't know anything about it's quality.

Last time Sutter was brought up on meme (I think when people were wanking about downjune's fic in the hockey exchange), I seem to remember the same, "There are many Sutter haters!!!" reaction, lol.

There are two fics I have enjoyed by her but I would never say she's a good writer generally. And tbh I would judge anyone who did in namespace.

I really like her writing and that she tries to go for different characterizations and draw in more of the team. Even though it doesn't always work, she seems willing to take risks with characters and topics which don't get touched on much. Just because she's not your thing doesn't mean nobody else should like her work.

I don't love everything she's done, but some of her work is up there in my favorite stuff in this fandom. I love that she's willing to go for angst, and she tends to develop it from character rather than from just woobifying external events or whatever, which I appreciate. She's also been writing Pens rare pairs lately, which pleases me to no end.

Idk, I've never read anything of hers that wasn't Sid/Claude and enjoyed her previous works, to the point where I was real surprised - in a bad way, I'm one of the nonnies who quit on it - once authors were revealed.
