Ovi, Kusnetsov, and Orlov headed to worlds, and apparently I hadn't been paying any attention to their roster and that they still had room for three skaters.

Or I just heard Gord or Ray droning on about the two remaining US roster spots the other day and assumed everyone else was either full or nearly so. Which was silly of me, since we've already had the discussion about the US team tends to set their roster early with a lot of younger talent.

I believe Russia left four spots open so they can still add one more guy (Tarasenko or Nichushkin, I guess).

Kulemin was supposed to go but apparently is too injured.

This is only barely related (sorry) but I just read about it on a German website and they used the German transliteration and it was so jarring that it took me a second to understand they meant Ovi lmao.

Eishockey-WM: Superstar Alexander Owetschkin verstärkt Russland

The other two are "Dimitri Orlow" and "Jewgeni Kusnezow" lol, I feel like they really should have used the English transliterations considering that's what's on the jerseys anyway.

Ha, funny. I'm not a German but a Finn, and I'd be really annoyed if they switched to English transliterations when talking about Russians in Finnish.

The English transliterations look just as jarring.

Maybe for Orlov and Ovechkin, but not for Kuznetsov.

Sport1.de by any chance?

lol yeah, I feel like most other sites use the English versions, but I don't have stats about this or something

I think you are right, and only asked cause I've rarely seen it transliterated like that and was cconfused for a moment, lol.

I saw last Saturday on r/hockey that Russia was leaving roster spots open for the Caps players, but it just made me cross that they were thinking along those lines and the Caps being out, so I didn't say anything here.

Nah, they were leaving spots open for any of the NHLers who may have been eliminated, not just the Caps. The tweet in question that was posted to reddit came from Malamud, whose main hobby is to troll the Caps fanbase.

I don't think it's particularly unusual. Switzerland was waiting on Josi but I think they said Tuesday was the last day that they'd hold a spot for him.

Josi and Ovechkin are two players for whom their national teams are always going to hold a spot open (and it's a given that they'll go if available) but Russia was just about skating some players short, which is a little weird.
