(Anonymous) 2016-05-11 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Fic Discussion
(Anonymous) 2016-05-11 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)I tried to read it when I got into the fandom, but that awful sex scene completely killed all interest for me.
Re: Fic Discussion
(Anonymous) 2016-05-11 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)This thread is already giving me a lot of questions about the fic lol
Re: Fic Discussion
(Anonymous) 2016-05-11 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)Ovi and Sid make a bet that if Ovi scores X many goals in a game (six? maybe?), then Ovi gets to fuck Sid, even though at that point I don't think either of them had expressed interest in guys or each other. So Ovi does score the goals and Sid shows up at his house and insists Ovi fuck him, and Ovi does because Sid keeps insisting, and Sid hates it, but he won't let Ovi stop.
I've read a fair bit of noncon and dubcon, written either for kink or for plot, and I have never had a sex scenes with consent issues bother me the way that scene bothered me.
Re: Fic Discussion
(Anonymous) 2016-05-11 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)thanks for the summary!
I can definitely see why this would bother people since it would bother me, too. :/ Even just reading this comment had me going NOPE.
Re: Fic Discussion
(Anonymous) 2016-05-12 12:09 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, it was a weird one where the dubiousness of the consent was on both sides, despite no external pressure being applied. But that was actually what made a lot of the fic interesting to me, them both trying to deal with the consequences of that and how they could find their way through it.
Re: Fic Discussion
(Anonymous) 2016-05-12 03:27 am (UTC)(link)+ 1 on the consent issues bothering me when I usually don't have major non- or dub-con squicks.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-11 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Fic Discussion
(Anonymous) 2016-05-11 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)So much of it is awful, but it was my introduction to the fandom, so I'm weirdly fond of it nonetheless. But that ending with the public coming out + relationship reveal guarantees that I will never reread it.
Re: Fic Discussion
(Anonymous) 2016-05-12 11:32 am (UTC)(link)Like, he made the considered decision to do what he saw as the right thing in coming out and had already come out to family and team, and his rejection of the Hart was because of hearing homophobia towards Alex right there, and having a deep and sincere reaction towards it. If he'd planned to make a public announcement at the awards it would be different, but it felt reasonable to me. (Also, it really helped that the other person was Ovechkin; if there's one person I would feel confident would accept a huge flamboyant public gesture in the spirit in which it was intended, it's him.)
I guess I'm the opposite of you because I don't like the hockey parts and the characterisation that much in most of the fic, but the handling of the mutual pining and Sid's struggle with his coming out and final gesture worked well for me.
Re: Fic Discussion
(Anonymous) 2016-05-12 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)I don't mind the coming out. The end of the fic is cute. It's the almost-end when the one reporter character takes over where I start scrolling. I understand that the author was in a pickle conveying what was happening with Ovi via Sid PoV post-breakup, but "character watches TV for 20k" is not my favorite.
Re: Fic Discussion
(Anonymous) 2016-05-12 03:39 am (UTC)(link)I also feel that it doesn't hold up well, though it was the first Ovi fic I read, right when I was like "hey my hometown has a hockey team i have a vague idea they're good i should watch them," not knowing what I was gonna do to myself. (<3 Ovi and the Caps so much though). I could get past the weird mutual dub-con, but the back half of the fic is a slog.
Now if I want iddy questionable Sid/Ovi originally posted on 2minutes4slashing, I pick the one where Sid's super alcoholic and the author clearly barely knew what hockey was.
Re: Fic Discussion
(Anonymous) 2016-05-12 03:47 am (UTC)(link)That description sounds incredibly familiar, but it kind of sounds like something I read on AO3 instead...did it ever end up getting posted there, or are there two such fics floating around?
Re: Fic Discussion
(Anonymous) 2016-05-12 03:52 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, it's on AO3, but I'm not in a place to give you the link rn. It's not in the Sid/Ovi tag for whatever reason. That, Heart in Hand, and the high school AU Sid/Ovi were all imported to AO3 from LJ, something I learned when scouring old hockey rpf comms for anything Caps.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-12 04:02 am (UTC)(link)Re: Fic Discussion
(Anonymous) 2016-05-12 04:07 am (UTC)(link)The high school one is in the Sid/Ovi tag. From Wood and From Ivory. It's long and iddy. The ending's kind of abrupt, though.
Being an Ovi fan meant slim pickings for awhile, man.
Re: Fic Discussion
(Anonymous) 2016-05-12 08:09 am (UTC)(link)The high school one was actually weirdly adorable. It stuck hard and fast to the old stereotypes about both Sid and Ovi, but it was still so cute. And it was definitely more readable than either HiH or the weird alcoholic!Sid one.

http://archiveofourown.org/works/311421
It's tropey and ridiculous and iddy af, and I kind of love it anyway. Although beware, it's kind of weird about Sid's (fictional) gf. I didn't like how it treated her.
