I think things are a bit different now -- like, I would actively attempt to make sure a kid didn't read explicit fic; if they find it, whatever, but I'm not going to be involved in it. On the other hand, though, I discovered fic (RPF, even) when I was like 14/15 and people on a message board I frequented were talking about it. I asked wtf they were talking about, I was sent links, even though the person who sent me a link knew I was that young.

I think that's going to vary pretty widely with the individual/group that you were involved with. A lot of people I know in fandom now would not have been okay doing that even back then.

da

I found fanfic at 13-14 because bored.com listed fanfiction.net, and I was a voracious reader whose parents couldn't keep enough books in the house.

Uh, how? It's not like you can ask for IDs online. If you're posting publicly, the best you can do is put up a higher rating so they have to click through a "this has content appropriate for 18+" button.

Did you even read the rest of my comment? Basically, I understand that people who know what they're looking for regardless of age will find a way to get to it, but that I'm also not gonna be sending links to anyone who I know is under eighteen.

The rest of your statement contradicted the part I quoted, hence my questioning it. I think you meant that you wouldn't actively supply explicit fic to underage readers, which is reasonable.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I thought I was clearer than that -- it's been a long couple of days on my end, so it's likely I wasn't as clear as I thought.

Make them solve a problem to do with complex interest to get a password to unlock the zip archive! Ask them about mortgages!

Lol, you should make them do a short quiz on the topic of teenage rights. If they think parents maintaining any rules denies young people autonomy and is an oppressive form of ageism, NO FIC FOR YOU.

Na

There was once a time where people really worried about explicit fic had members-only sites and part of the requirement was to join was to mail a photocopy of your ID to certify you were 18+. I am glad that has gone away.
