I don't think Flower's getting traded this summer, because one hot playoff run is just not enough to not only make a 21-year-old your starter but trade away your insurance, too. I think we're going to see Flower starting next year but Murray playing a bunch of games, too (or possibly vice versa), and if all goes well, probably trade Flower next summer. So I'm not "worried" so much as already convinced we don't have Flower much longer. Which breaks my heart tbh, because he's one of my favorites and he's always been here.

And yeah, I definitely appreciate Murray's contributions and what he's accomplished, but I've been a member of the Flower Playoffs Redemption Squad for years now, and I'm bummed he's stuck on the sidelines through all this.

Also can I just say before we settle on Murray for good, can we please do something about those huge rebounds off his pads. They about give me a heart attack every time.

+1 to an extent. I think if we lose, we'll see Flower start next year. If we win (with Murray in), it'll be Murray. How could it not be?

Either way, Flower won't be worth his cap hit much longer with Murray playing like this. It's fucking gut-wrenching because this was Flower's best regular season in how long? And to think it was fucked because of multiple concussions which the Pens org did nothing about by way of keeping him off. I can't even think about it without getting mad.

Re: Geno, I hope he's not doing more damage to his elbow coming back early. Also I just really want pictures of his baby in a Cup. He's due in the next couple weeks! :D

I don't know that the cap hit is going to be a problem this year when Cullen and Lovejoy are our most significant UFAs and Bennett and Schultz are our RFAs. Nobody key has a big blinking "gonna get paid" sign over their head.

There've been multiple head hits this year that I thought the Pens have handled poorly - most within the last two weeks - but neither of Flower's concussions seems to have been caused by an obvious head hit or other incident where you'd clearly want to have someone checked out, and Flower seems to have been pretty proactive in self-reporting and then staying out as long as necessary. So it sucks that he had them, but I'm not inclined to be mad at anyone about them. (Except maybe James Neal, because screw that jerk anyway.)

And yes to Geno and his elbow. :\

He's due in the next couple weeks! :D

LOL, phrasing, nonnie. :D

Although, I forgot Olli Maatta's starting his new contract next year. So that is a cap hit we're going to have to account for somehow.

Lovejoy leaving, Schultz's paycut (or him leaving too) and the rising cap should take care of Maatta's raise, really. If they can dump the Kunitz contract this summer they're golden.

The next big "crunches" coming are when Hornqvist's contract is up and Dumoulin's deal. Dumo could get something like Simon Despres did in Anaheim, though it will probably be lower because he'll never score a goal in his natural life. For that, we may have to sacrifice someone like Cole.

There's the question of re-signing Daley, unless Pouliot has stepped up as a suitable replacement. That goes for Bonino as well, but if he wants a huge payday there's a replacement for him too. That flurry of WBS NHL deals given to Wilson, Rust and Kuhnhackl are going to seem like godsends pretty soon.

They'd have to trade Fleury (or Murray, whichever) mid-season. If he's around next summer, they won't get anything for him, because he'll be taken in the expansion draft.

I don't know why everyone's so sure they'd be taken in the expansion draft. There will likely only be one expansion team. That team will only need only two goalies. All 30 teams will have goalies exposed. There's a lot of good backups in the league.

Re: General fandom discussion

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Last time there was an expansion draft, the teams were allowed to take three goalies (there were two expansion teams and six were chosen) and we haven't heard any rules yet this time around limiting the number of goalies taken. Teams will take as many good goalies as they can, not only for their own two slots, but for use as valuable trade pieces. Heck, last time, the Sharks gave away draft picks to both teams in exchange for them not taking a goaltender.

Assuming there's three to six goalies taken, you have to guess that Murray will be one of them looking around the league. (Fleury has to be protected unless the Pens trade him, because he's got a NMC.)

Actually I saw an article recently that said that because Fleury only has a partial NTC, he would not need to be protected. So the Pens could choose to protect Murray and expose Fleury if they wanted.

His NTC has nothing to do with it; he has a full NMC. That's what will force him to be protected. Even if he had a full NTC, that still wouldn't force matters unless he has a NMC.

Re: General fandom discussion

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Na

true, but unless they manage to trade him beforehand the Pens will have to protect Fleury because of his NTC, leaving Murray exposed. Assuming he manages to play like he has for this very small sample of games, at his current price it's hard to find a better choice, let alone two.

Well, looking at this playoffs alone, just look across the ice. Vasilevskiy won't be protected over Bishop.

Re: General fandom discussion

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
NA
not necessarily. The idea all along with the bolts was that Vasilevskiy would develop for a few years then probably take over once Bishop's contract ended. Bishop is really good but he's also 29, and his record in terms of staying healthy is obviously not great. I wouldn't be surprised if Yzerman offers Bishop. It will depend on how much money he wants.

Wait. Bishop's 29???? This has no bearing on this discussion except I thought he was like 22. Huh.

Yes lol. He kind of came out of nowhere a bit when he was traded to the Bolts but he'll be 30 in November.

I am admittedly not a bolts fan, but umm I am still sitting here shaking my head that he is that old.

Also I feel like I should point out that I'm 33 so I'm not like "my god he's so old he's practically dead". More just like huh, I guess I thought he fell into the group with Johnson and the other triplets who's names I don't know that played for Cooper in the AHL.

NA Am I hallucinating or wasn't there an update that only full NMCs are protected and Fleury has a limited NMC? And NTCs are not protected at all.

Re: General fandom discussion

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
He's got a modified NTC plus a full NMC.
