Re: Fic Discussion

From: (Anonymous)

It's been awhile since I read the HS one, so I don't remember if the author clearly favored the Pens. The long Sid/Ovi idfic that isn't HiH writes the Pens being the world's shittiest team.

As for caricaturing the fuck out of Ovi, I agree that it was/is really frustrating. There were people writing Ovi and Nicky/Ovi before Ferritin4, but she really helped popularize Nicky/Ovi and is about 80% of the reason Ovi's not written as a cartoon anymore. At least by people who write the Caps (I don't really read Pens fic or Caps/Pens fic anymore to know if there's been any changes there). I approve of her work, to say the least.

When I first started getting into hockey rpf, Sid/Ovi was literally the only Ovi ship with any decent-length fic. I fell in love with Nicky/Ovi somewhere around the time I was going through old LJ fic for ANYTHING CAPS GODDAMMIT, but it wasn't rpf that got me there. Because if there were ever any Nicky/Ovi epics written back in the day, they've been lost.

I think it's the ending that prevented it from ever being "one to reread constantly because there are limited Ovi fixes in this fandom and a nonnie's got needs" for me, but that was before I knew most hockey fics skip the ending. At least it has one, lol. And I do remember there being cute parts.

I don't mind the coming out. The end of the fic is cute. It's the almost-end when the one reporter character takes over where I start scrolling. I understand that the author was in a pickle conveying what was happening with Ovi via Sid PoV post-breakup, but "character watches TV for 20k" is not my favorite.

The Geno/Anna Russian documentary now has good English subs apparently. I'm planning to watch it now, but first I had to share this link with meme while silently crying blood tears:

They are so fucking cute, I can't even deal.

You know what, fuck it. The Stars fans can swarm me for saying this, but I held off on this last night out of deference to the post-elimination blues, which as a Blues fan I know well.

But I just couldn't get where this comment was coming from: 'Honestly, if it weren't for Elliot the Stars probably would have beaten the Blues.'. I mean thanks for acknowledging Moose for standing on his head for 6 out of 7 games in the series, but the implication that he is really the only reason the Blues are advancing really chafes.

It's one thing for people to not give your team credit because they don't watch your games in the regular season, but the takeaway from this series was really Blues have got one good player that stopped us, really?

Dallas' losses were 4-3 (OT), 6-1, 4-1, 6-1. All 3 Dallas wins were by 1 goal (2-1, 3-2, 3-2). And the 6th game, even taking into account score effects, had the Blues totally dominating possession for the last 50 minutes. Jamie Benn was held to 1 goal this series and in 4 of the games didn't register a point. There was a moment when Benn looked like he was going to score in the second in Game 7 but Stastny was there, playing brilliant defense to stop it - as he's quietly been doing this whole series. Not to mention the team defense keeping Spezza and Sharp from factoring too much into the scoring as well. The Blues penalty kill managed to keep the Dallas power play off the board until game 5. Playoffs rookie scoring leader Fabbri registered 8 points this series and there were 7 Blues players that scored 2 or more goals. (Stars had 3 players who each had 2 goals.) Backes was beast that ended the series with a 4-game point streak.

Not all of that was the work of Elliott. Would it hurt to give the other team some credit beyond going, Oh it's just that one goalie that was sick? If he'd been anything less than god-like, we got this?

There's no shame in losing a hard-fought 7-game series and it's one that can get a better post-mortem than that and the comments about 'Hitch's turtle strategy and Blues playoff history mean Stars absolutely make the WCF'. I mean, after the extreme turtling in Period 3 of Game 2, the turtle never truly reared its ugly shell since.

I generally come in peace, Stars fans. I honestly thought your team would be the cause of more Blues playoff heartbreak and I'd have been willing to say it was because you were the better team and your speedy strategy prevailed. Blues heavy hockey might not to retire with Hitch, etc.

It kinda sucks to have your team make it to the Conference Final for the first time in 15 years and have other people say it's all on the back of 1 player. True, Ells has been the MVP. But they're a different team this year. Ells isn't doing it alone.

I agree, but is it better or worse than them saying "we were totally the better team except for a few ill-timed defensive collapses around our garbage goalies"? The Stars aren't better than the Blues, and their style of play at least as it's constructed this season isn't built for the playoffs, and they were a lucky bounce against an injured Minnesota team away from a game seven in that series, too.

I'm not a Blues fan, but I am really, really tired of the Stars' hype train this season.

Re: Fic Discussion

Yeah, the coming out narrative and the sympathetic portrayal of Ovechkin, despite the POV character being Sid, was another big part of why I liked it. Part of the different handling of coming out may be because it predates the NHL's partnership with You Can Play. New fics are dealing with a league that at least pays lip service to the idea that an out player would be welcomed, but before that? Not so much.

You're way more straightforward than I am. "I am really, really tired of the Stars' hype train this season," is basically the TL;DR of my feelings last night. I re-typed my comment about 80 times and considered just leaving a brief rant in Fandom Venting instead.

The benefit of sleeping on it calmed me down and made me willing to admit that there were times the Blues couldn't be assed to stop the Dallas offense. Our 'elite D' had an awful amount of brainfarts at the worst times. Sometimes the better team is just the more opportunistic team. If the Blues lost last night I would've been willing to call the Stars better for it.

Part of it is that their style of play sets my teeth on edge, and I've been told for nine months I'm supposed to love it because it's going to save hockey from dreaded 3-2 boredom, so I have very little patience for it.

I've had similar thoughts about my team's defense versus them, too. "Dammit guys, you knew it was coming, really??" But it's the playoffs. Everyone in them deserves to be there, especially at this stage of the game.

Re: Game Day Thread May 11, 2016

I can't speak for every Stars fan, but I knew going into this series that we were likely to lose. I was so torn in round 1 because I hate the Hawks but I knew we would struggle against you guys. In the regular season, the Blues shut us down so often (I will admit, I didn't expect us to have 2 blowouts. I thought we would be struggling in 1-goal games, which most of the other ones were). You were the better team in the end.

On the other hand, I love watching Stars hockey. It's exciting, it's high-event, it gives us all heart attacks. I love it. It also sucks to hear that we would never make it, that we got into the playoffs by luck and it's never going to work, etc. etc. People were writing us off before we even started this series, and we took it to 7. Are you surprised that some fans are protective/defensive?

(I also don't think the person saying the thing about 'Hitch's turtle strategy' was a Stars fan? They didn't identify as such and it seems weird to me that a fan would be that overconfident/jinxing when it genuinely could have gone either way.)

I'm still mad that this wasn't the WCF, tbh. I'm grumbling about the playoff bracket until further.

This is amazing! Geno is such an OTT romantic, I love it so much. I knew about the tiger thing: http://cs625425.vk.me/v625425125/22c29/7NzgnoyvIzI.jpg but the 'for my Jerry thing' as well... GENO!! This instagram post also makes more sense now: https://www.instagram.com/p/qPLdlLKjkC

Do you really need validation from fans of the team your team just knocked out of the playoffs? It's obvious from the results (like you said) that the Blues were the better team and even before the series started almost everyone already said that, too.

Re: Game Day Thread May 11, 2016

I'm not a fan of either of these teams but wow, I'm crazy impressed with your ability to belittle one teams fans while simultaneously being butt-hurt that they belittled your team.

Irony much?

(I thought the Hitch comment came from a pessimistic Blues nonny, myself.)

I think, though, as a Stars fan, this is the "what if" game right now. Blues were the healthier team and Elliott stood on his head. Stars defense came crashing down, and finishing got harder. We got a sudden reminder about why we wanted Kari to have a lighter load.

What if either team started a different goalie in game 7? What if we had Seguin? What if we took a risk and played one of the rusty D? And what if none of those things could have changed anything?

Re: Game Day Thread May 11, 2016

There's protective/defensive and there's dismissive. Dismissive is reducing a good team down to one good player. Being only willing to credit goaltending, when the same people (online hockey fans, sport writers) writing off the Stars said that if there were gonna be any blowouts in the series it would be Stars winning - that Blues would come out on top if they manage it keep it to low-scoring, one-goal affairs.

If you think your defense and/or goaltending are underrated and need defending, the Blues offense similarly deserves more credit than it gets. It's not just Tarasenko scoring out there.

Hazards of being the fan of a non-juggernaut fandom team: they're not talked about a lot by other people. If my team's talked about I'd rather it not be in a way that incites my own protectivess/defensiveness.

I also wonder what's to be protective over on the Stars side? Very few posts around in fic-writing fandom that talk about the quality of the team that aren't written by Stars fans themselves. My own comment was mostly talking about how the Blues defense and offense contributed to the series win, since no one wanted to give them credit for it.

I think it was pretty silly for people to count the Stars out of it before the series even started (which, honestly, mostly seemed to be coming from non-Blues fans, since we tend to be a pessimistic lot), and I saw a decent amount of that sentiment, so I can understand Stars fans being defensive. They have a very good teams and the series could have very easily gone either way.

That being said, I do find the "if X had happened, we would have won" or "they only won because of their goalie" thing pretty irritating, too, especially when it seems to downplay a team's efforts. But I do understand the impulse, and I think it's something that a lot of fans do after a loss.

Eh sure I was butt-hurt, I admitted that at the top of my post. But what was I belittling about the Stars fans? Like, I didn't go, "Wow you're short-changing my team, idiots, FUCK YOU." So I'm not sure what was belittling about my post?

Most game/series-related talk was about their goaltending and when they did mention the Blues it was to say they stole the series with only goaltending. That wasn't true. I responded by pointing that out.

Admittedly there were some feelings involved to my pointing things out. Should I have left a short, "Our D and forwards weren't so bad either, y'know?" Am I not allowed to have any feelings about things?

Upon reread, I get where it sounds like the point is asking for validation. But I wasn't out to get people to switch allegiances or eat their sportsmanship vegetables. I just didn't think some comments about the series aligned with fact. The paragraph of performance comparisons wasn't meant to trash the Stars, just show the Blues had more than a hot goalie.

Wishing people wouldn't be dismissive was my point.

Re: Game Day Thread May 11, 2016

Lordy. This. So hard. Y'all won. Stars fans are broken-hearted. Maybe give them 24 hours to be sad before you start looking for validation that your team was so obviously the better team.

Over on the Stars side? We've got a lot to be protective about in real life. It just kinda spills over.

/Bitter DFW nonny who still is bitter about people justifying "Well, they aren't good, that's why they're not talking about it" even during the second round of the playoffs. Or. "Oh, they're kinda good this year."
