I mean, yes, candle-beck's stuff, but even stuff like americanleaguer and synchronik are pretty HEA adverse. It is sort of dead, or mostly a few people who post a lot to Ao3, but not other activity that I know of. (Which pairing?)

It's not so much a vague undercurrent as a loud current, and I really dislike it. Like, sorry AYRT had bad experiences when they were 12, but I'm not going to 'think of the children' in writing fic, and if there were 'choose not to warn' labels on those fics or the equivalent, even with those authors' notes, well, thems the breaks.

I've been reading fic for about as long as the AYRT has been alive, and I think the professions of YKINMYATO except for that one are pretty terrible. As are the idea that you need to slap a 'depiction doesn't equal endorsement' label on everything, because it fucking doesn't, and that should be taken as given. Fiction doesn't need to be 'improving literature,' and if you don't read at your own risk, especially things marked as such, the onus is on the reader not the writer.

I think if anyone's blaming the fic they read when they were 11 for their messed up views of the world, they should really take a step back and look at literally every other piece of media they've been fed. I read some messed up shit as a kid, but almost all of it was from actual books I got from the library that I willingly consumed. Take some responsibility and realize the internet is not your babysitter.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I 100% took gross lessons from reading those harmful ideas as a kid, and I want those fics to go away.

Yeah, the internet is not their babysitter. And it's funny how the attitude is rarely made into anything more actionable than 'stop writing fic I don't like.'

Heh, I was going to say it kind of reminds me of some of the strictures about fiction in contemporary American Christian culture, which are that fiction should be edifying and preferably not contain anyone doing anything too objectionable, or if they do do something objectionable, they eventually reap the consequences and/or learn the error of their ways. But some things really are just too objectionable to appear at all.

Welp this USA team isn't even going to medal. They are the worst. Suck all the good players that would normally participate are either hurt or in need of a contract.

Just put Demko in, I'm sick of Condon/Kinkaid neither of which I have a high opinion of.

Re: Worlds!

From: (Anonymous)
Even with a decent roster I wouldn't auto-expect a medal, but this one is utter garbage.

This tournament has been an overall disappointment to watch, though. Canada is playing like shit and still blowing out opponents and Sweden has really been struggling. At least some of the smaller countries are making it interesting.

That’s my analysis: β€œI dunno, man.” LOL

Re: Fandom Venting

Maybe don't blame the internet for scarring you? I guarantee there's published books just as bad.

Re: Worlds!

I been watching Fin and US matches when I can. US I shouldn't be surprise but still YUCK. Fin the have some good players and they are playing sucky as well. Their PP play is pretty good though.

By the way, what's up with McDavid I figure he'll be pilling up points not what ever he is doing.

Re: Fandom Venting

Kids these days, amirite? Noticing faults and consequences of the media they consume, how awful. Clearly fandoming wrong.

Re: Fandom Venting

ayrt

I was thinking specifically of both candle-beck and americanleaguer when I wrote that comment, tbh. Neither of them had happy endings and they were the two big authors when I got into baseball rpf as an angsty not-quite adult and I ate it up with a spoon. (Bryant/Rizzo. I know way too many Cubs fans. But they're not into fic fandom like I am. It's a tragedy.)

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Sure, yes, criticizing fic is the exact same as media criticism.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
When their response to the (alleged) "faults and consequences of the media they consume" is "it shouldn't exist", yeah, they're fandoming wrong.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
More like: Instead of allowing everyone to make a choice to consume media based on their experiences, with all those faults---chooses to impose their own morality on fiction, taking away other people's freedom.

Re: Worlds!

From: (Anonymous)
Last year, Team Canada had a stacked roster and a mission to get Crosby triple gold. This year, they're clearly on vacation and fucking around with the puck until the third period when they realize they might actually lose the game and quickly pot a few goals off a tired goalie. It's not worth watching.

Re: Hockey Articles/Media

From: (Anonymous)
*narrows eyes* Yeah, I'm going to assume they spend very little time actually watching either team.

I feel like Cubs fic is all I see in the tag these days, though, so I think it's due to be the next comparatively big baseball fandom. Maybe request it for Yuletide? If they win the World Series you'll definitely get eyeballs.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Yeah, I'm not sure if candle-beck's fic will have the same appeal to me now, though their writing and prose are still lovely. (Americanleaguer once wrote a fic that wobbiefied Jonathan Papelbon, which, wow. Were we ever that young?)

There is some Bryzzo fic on Ao3, though I have not idea if it's good, and if the fandom were more active than it is, it'd have the makings of a juggernaut - two really good players on a winning team, both pretty good looking, and they named their own ship.

Re: Hockey Articles/Media

From: (Anonymous)
I yelled about that during a prior round.

Re: Hockey Articles/Media

From: (Anonymous)

Given that a quarter of the article is still devoted to talking about the ECF teams...I think that's a fair assumption.

Re: Hockey Articles/Media

From: (Anonymous)
AYRT

Yeah, I got the sense that they paid very little attention to teams without a lot of hype around them from the first round analysis (didn't read the second round one), but I continue to be annoyed by it. And I don't think this one has enough humor to make up for the glaring lack of actual insight.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Fic is media, yeah, and while kink and let kink is a fun motto, people enjoying enjoying whatever kind of fic doesn't mean it should be immune from criticism or analysis.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Wanting something to exist =/= thinking it's immune from criticism.
