na

angst is my very favourite thing in the whole world (well, in fanfic) and I feel like it mostly happens in mutual pining fic now which, don't get me wrong, I adore, but I still miss some variety.

Me, toooooo. And yeah, I love mutual pining, which I definitely hadn't encountered in this volume before hockey fandom, but I want other stuff, too.

I know it's a different sport, but I feel like baseball had the absolute market on that, if you're interested at all.

Honestly not my sport at all (in that I don't know the rules...), but I'm still interested if you have any recs or names handy?

Not sure if this is right thread spot for this since it relates mainly to research for fic writing, but here we go.

I'm in the process of putting together a Nicky/Ovi fic dealing with the lockout years and all the stuff that went down with their relationship there, and was wondering if anyone had any good resources for Dynamo Moscow? If there's any way to track down the roster from then or anything around the dynamics of the team or more about how the team played. I'm probably overthinking but wanting to write a fic for them in this time period of their career is making me want to have details correct.

When that was one of the best international hockey moments of my life. ;)

hockeydb.com is truly a magical place, nonnie, at least in terms of rosters and stats.

Unfortunately I hate mutual pining with every fiber of my soul, mostly because of overexposure in this fandom. I feel like it's acceptable because both parties can angst without ever doing anything wrong or ever coming into conflict, because they only have to realize that their feelings are returned by someone who obviously adores them.

Its not like I want unacknowledged abuse fics 24/7, either. I just want character growth. And angst based in real problems.

What kind of angst would you like to see?

Re: Fandom Venting

But when you're saying that you want it to be less fucked-up, does that mean you don't want any depiction of fucked-up things? Like, I was already tired of rape depictions on TV back when Katey Segal's character was gangraped on Sons of Anarchy, but I still think Jessica Jones was an interesting and effective show.

There's raising awareness, and then there's saying some subjects are just off-limits regardless of handling, and then there's ignoring the very specific context of kink fic.

I'd been so nervous the entire third, hoping they would't get scored on in heartbreaking fashion and with all the pk time. Then, when it took them quite some time to decide who should be on the ice for that face-off, I was sooo hopeful and then magic!!! I'm so proud of this team!

Another anon posted these a while ago, but it's a good place to start: http://dekedangle-rpfanon.dreamwidth.org/2917.html?thread=12035429#cmt12035429

Basically, candlebeck, americanleaguer and synchronik are good places to start. Sophiahelix, who writes hockey as well, has written some good stuff too.

I feel like we should send this deker tissues or something.

This will probably make me sound like a terrible person, but for example dealing with trauma (for example childhood trauma), serious injury or depression as more "external factors", then struggling with relationships because of different expectations regarding the future (children or no? one wants an open relationship the other does not etc), long distance relationships (which hockey seems perfect for and there is some, so that's good), and I also just like fic in general that deals with more serious flaws of character like homophobia as an obvious example.

There's probably a lot more, but this is what I thought of first.

I feel like there was wank about even the concept of most of these at some point so I don't write it often or when I do, I don't post it...

Thank you! I will if there's angst. ;)

I think so too. They're gonna need them.

Re: Kinkmeme Discussion

From: (Anonymous)
I am not ever going to read any Matt Cullen/rookie daddy kink, but I appreciate that there are people out there who want that. I think there's been one or two fics already posted to AO3, even. Good work, fandom.

Re: Worlds!

From: (Anonymous)
Me too! So proud!! Also yeah, I was obviously REALLY hoping they would score, but it was like I couldn't even believe my own hope? lol, I was so pessimistic, it was terrible. Sooo good in the end though!
Thinking about it I already want to rewatch the whole game (and be less worried this time). Should have recorded it, damn.

I have the exact same feelings re: Sons of Anarchy and Jessica Jones. And no, please don't stop writing about fucked up stuff! It's just that (once pervasive) supposedly fluffy fic that contained "romantic" stalking, sex where one person is so drunk they forget about it while the other is stone cold sober, etc that bothers me.

Using a silly fictional example, some of my favourite HP fic back in the day was Marauders stuff where Sirius has a lot of prejudice going into Hogwarts, stuff where he mistreats muggleborns and has to learn to outgrow his parents ideals. Fics where his parents aren't written as cartoon villains, but very bad people who nonetheless care about their son. Using that as a parallel for racism, I don't want racism in fics to go away! Just the unconscious stuff that no one acknowledges as racism & that I feel is actively harmful, like writing all black characters as caricatures and sidekicks. But again, I'm not going to go around forcing that preference on people-- it's just more of a wish, I guess.

Baseball may not be the fandom for you if you aren't interested in the sport, tbh. IME the best fics in the fandom, including the ones people are reccing, tend to lean pretty heavily on real games/seasons, the politics of the clubhouse, the hierarchy of the various leagues, even straight up statistics, with a huge dollop of an almost mystical reverence for ~the game~ (I think it's because of the wannabe-Ken Burns thing that also infects the sports side of the fandom, but idk). I did enjoy some of the fics even before I got heavily into the sport, but FTR I'm American, knew the rules and grew up steeped in, well, Ken Burns and Field of Dreams and all that.
