Re: Ask Meme - home vs away

From: (Anonymous)
home-ice advantage is statistically a real thing but I think it's only like 55%-45%. (Here's one thing quoting this: http://hockeynumbers.blogspot.co.nz/2006/10/home-team-advantage-i-do-think-that.html but not calculating it.) I don't know how much it's fueled by more quantifiable differences like line matchups and the faceoff thing and how much it's that a home team is more likely to be well-rested. people will say it's the ~crowd~ or whatever but I have some fairly strong doubts about that.

So I do think a bunch of stuff like wins at home etc is meaningless - people trying to fill air time with narrative. On the other hand, a lot of stats people do restrict some analysis to just away games when it comes to analysis because different scorers at different rinks are known to record differently. It's either LA or Vancouver that notoriously records a higher number of hits. Some rinks calculate shots on goal more generously than others. etc. So that's why it can be good practice just to look at away games, because away games whatever rink variation will probably average out, but home games are 50% of your total with that one set of scorers who could potentially significantly bias your results.

Re: Random Thread

By the numbers, I think self-insert fic vastly vastly outnumbers other stories (it's hard to know because I think wattpad does their stats weird), so I'm not too sorry about them only knowing about the 'imagine' style fics. I remember the utter utter shitshow that was baseball rpf fic being mentioned on Deadspin (and I think they also linked some incest fic). Mostly, the general decision to all ignore each other (the players, media, and fic writers) has made me a lot more comfortable with writing fic.

It would be a strange thing to do even if it wasn't about PKane.

Yeah I think a slightly good thing about sports rpf being kind of already a known entity is that it's an old story for most writers. People don't feel the need to write "sexy fanfiction about Claude Giroux, what's up with that?" articles or ask players about it anymore because everybody kind of knows the lay of the land, and in a way that makes it old news or uninteresting news.

I think this applies to other RPF too, I guess. If one direction was still together there wouldn't be a need to ask them DO U KNOW ABOUT FIC LOL (because we know they do) or write an article examining why people write/read it, because it's been done. As much as I cringe to think about how much their lives have been affected by rabid shippers I'm glad it's at least a conversation that's over for them.

Re: Random Thread

From: (Anonymous)
If they bother googling "[their name] fanfiction" then they'll find it for sure. AO3 is on the first page for all the players I test-googled on a clean browser that I never use for AO3 or even googling anything. So I'm just going to assume none of them are that curious and continue living in my happy bubble of not thinking about it and archive-locking everything.

Re: Eyebrow Bracket

I have nothing against Mason, but there was no way Neuvirth's eyebrows weren't going to get my vote in almost any bracket he was in.

That's very interesting and thorough, thank you, nonnie! I can see what you mean about using away games for analysis, which isn't something I'd thought of.

Re: Random Thread

You can actually figure out what a non-google influenced search would look like by doing it on duckduckgo instead.

Re: Random Thread

From: (Anonymous)
Interesting duckduckgo brings up NHL Imagines on Fanfiction.net and Wattpad as the first couple results when you search "[player name] fanfiction"

It's not really equivalent to a google search, though. They use different search algorithms, so the results are different, even comparing a first time ever google search on a new computer to a duckduckgo search.

given that my best thoughts on the "how the fuck do you have enough TIME to date an entire team?" issue amount to roman josi being so hot time itself bends for him (or some kind of being able to split off multiple copies of himself temporarily), probably not.

I see, based on this experience I don't know if it'll replace Google for me.

This game is what I was expecting this series to be: fast, tons of north-south, some breakaways.

That Pens PK though. <3333 (Although I'm a little mystified that they called that particular thing, given all the things they haven't called, on both sides...)

Re: Game Day Thread, May 18, 2016

that was an absolutely terrible Bolts PP tho. The Pens did great but they didn't need to try awfully hard.

Now I want Werenski/Larkin fake dating so Larkin looks like he has an off-ice life.

Well, if there's anyone who would have the necessary determination and tools (ie. blinding hotness, Swiss accent) to date an entire NHL team, I feel like it would be Roman Josi. The splitting could be an extension of that--Roman could still play hockey, but also has the ability to 'split' himself as needed to date the rest of the Preds.

Because let's be real: Shea Weber is definitely not dating the same Roman Josi that James Neal is (sorry, Nealer).

Howwwww did this turn into another Vasilevskiy bailout session?? The Tampa D is beyond terrible this period.

Well, Sid is '5 foot 11,' yes?

Re: Game Day Thread, May 18, 2016

From: (Anonymous)
I'm pretty sure he's reasonably close to that though, yeah? Or I've never really heard much to say otherwise... Geno's the one people side-eye of the team being way taller than listed, 6'3"
