Re: Fandom Venting

Oh godddd, TFV's robot shit. I agree that fandom has mostly moved on from that, but the fact that it ever happened will never not enrage me. Why yes, let's fetishize extreme mental illness/neuro-atypicality to the point that a dude building himself a literal padded cell because he can't deal with life is totes adorbs. It's probably the only thing in hockey rpf that angers me more than elite hockey players eating a diet meant for a 5'2" woman on an extreme weight loss plan.

Whenever I watch behind the scenes stuff, I'm constantly reminded of just how much locker rooms seem like cults. And then I get sad at the lack of fic where the teams actually are cults.

Are we talking about the psychic fic? I don't disagree that the characterization was laughably off, but the padded cell there wasn't presented as "adorable" - it was part of Sid's quickly degrading ability to cope before his complete and utter breakdown.

(And tbh, as a person whose mental illness/neurodivergence thoroughly interferes with my ability to do even basic life tasks or maintain meaningful connections, I really appreciate fics where characters have to deal with similar problems and still manage to maintain friendships and careers. I wouldn't call it fetishistic so much as it is wish fulfillment, though I wish it involved more actually ill characters instead of robots and psychics all the time. IIRC the fic we're talking about ended with Sid working with therapists to get better coping methods but didn't have him get magically "cured", which really made it stick out to me in a good way.)

Finland's was posted on reddit.

I love the shopping trolley, it adds that classic touch.

I want to know where they're finding fic that has them habitually spending the summer together. I don't think I've ever seen that.

If you want ungenerous, I'm filing this person with the people who say "penguins fans make me hate the penguins!" and "I'm a huge penguins fan but I hope they lose everything and get leprosy because other fans annoy me!"

It's such a neat double insult. Not only do I hate what you love, it's because you made me hate it.

IME people who just straight up hate the penguins because they're Flyers or Caps fans are much more tolerable than those who sigh about how ~the fans made them hate it.

Sort of agree: always makes me wonder why the hell they choose to follow those kinds of people. You can choose who you interact with in a fandom, why go with the ones that annoy you so much? Like the one recently who had only people whining about injuries and not being proud of the team winning: if they're that negative, I'm pretty sure it's not just about this one thing.

What oflights fic is that, nonnie?

Re: NHL Awards - Ted Lindsay

From: (Anonymous)
Yeah, Holtby's splits are meh enough for me to want to sit back a few years and watch him regress like Quick did post-2012. It's a pattern for goalies!!! It's just how life goes. Price didn't see a sudden spike in sv% from year to year and I wish more people would realize that spikes like those are an abnormality and not an indicator of long-term success.

Of course, I am more than a little bit miffed that Schneider didn't get nominated for the Vezina, so I am perhaps not the best person to discuss this. The winner should absolutely be Bishop, though, and to be perfectly honest, Erik Karlsson should be the one nominated for this award.

Are you complaining about the sentinel and guide AU? That's...

Re: Fandom Venting

There's nothing wrong with liking teams and hating others. Don't do this ideological purity shit.

Anna Kasterova is pregnant! They announced it in a new documentary about Geno that aired today. Also, who do we beg for translations now that genobest is gone???

Oh my god! That's amazing, I'm so excited.

This so much.

Re: Hockey Articles/Media

I SCREECHED WITH EXCITEMENT.

But also just heard about the news about Catherine and Kris, so my emotions are all over the place :(

Re: Hockey Articles/Media

From: (Anonymous)
Based on what I see she looks a few months along, wow! Surprised they could hide it without anyone finding out.

Re: Hockey Articles/Media

From: (Anonymous)
Yeah, that really surprised me too- her last few instagram posts have hidden her body and then I guess she posted an old pixture of herself in a swim suit?

Also, from the comments apparently the documentary involves them planning out the nursery. And from this instagram post, apparently Geno is constantly making sure she eats: instagram.com/p/BFGuDT9MCVa/

I'm so happy for them!

Lol this is mostly the kind of not fancy I imagined, Russia should have made fancy rooms for everyone!

NAYRT

I think they're talking about Fastening One Heart, but that'd be just as WTF.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
It is uniquely frustrating to hear that when you are a fan of the thing, yeah. It feels really personal. "Your enjoyment of this thing is obnoxious to me."

And it's not just hockey; I saw some of that when Mad Max: Fury Road first came out. "It's so over-hyped that I already hate it and I haven't even seen it." Like, damn, sorry people like something and are excited about it? Sorry you're such a hipster you can't like something if other people already do?

It probably makes more sense for hockey teams if you go in multi-team spaces like reddit, maybe. But usually people don't specify that.

Re: Random Thread

From: (Anonymous)
Could you expand on that? In what ways do they seem like cults?

Re: Worlds!

From: (Anonymous)
AYRT - The hosting nation privilege I guess. And the other teams might swap venues after the first stage, but I might have that confused.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I mean unlike that Mad Max example these people presumably have seen the Penguins play before settling on their hatred lol.

Re: Hockey Articles/Media

From: (Anonymous)
I enjoy how completely awkward Geno awkward looks while they're being interviewed together. He has no idea what to do with his hands or what to look at, whether it's him talking or her talking.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I'd say a lot of hockey fans frequent multi-team spaces, though. Even if you don't go on Reddit, there are annoying fans of *insert team* to be found on Twitter, Tumblr, here on meme, or even in person if you attend games. Or you could know obnoxious fans IRL.
