Re: Ask Meme

From: (Anonymous)
I just started watching hockey like a month ago, and some things are really hard to Google, so please forgive me if this is a really stupid question but... When play is 4 on 4, are there 'special teams' on ice? Do both teams play their PK? If not, is there a particular line-up that's usually sent out in that situation?

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
No, she did it when the collection went live too.

Re: Ask Meme

From: (Anonymous)
The players chosen will usually be more offensive-minded than the groups used for the PK. Usually the better puck movers (guys who carry the puck well and can start up plays a lot) and players who can skate well/fast due to the ice being more open and plays developing faster as a result. Also kind of depends on who is in the box for each team at the time. I probably wouldn't use "special teams" to refer to it though.

It was more obvious to see the strategy in choices a coach uses in the years where regular season OT was 4 on 4 since we saw it a lot more frequently. If you go on http://dobberhockey.com/frozenpool_linecombo.php you can filter for OT in those years and kind of get an idea of who played together and compare it to 5 on 5 and other situations.

Now I want this fic too. Backes especially mentions his motor mouth and ADD a lot. I wouldn't be surprised if he put the plan together.

So yes. I feel comfortable making the call. 10/10. The douchiest dude-bro

I'm curious why it wouldn't be scamming if she's only done it once. She's still artificially adjusting the existing algorithm to change where her story shows up to ensure mad page views. And probably artificial pay views since I imagine she gets clicks from people expecting something new and different.

Ugh. What are words. *max page views. and page views not pay views. Nobody's getting paid here.

Yet another article on Brent Burns! I can't complain, though, they all have weird and funny shit in them.

http://www.si.com/nhl/2016/05/06/brent-burns-san-jose-sharks-fun-things-to-know

My favorite story may be that he likes wrestling so much that he sneak-attacks teammates at random opportunities, including right after they open their doors to him. Or that he bought one of those white murder vans I assume used, probably off craigslist, and had to take the disco ball and fog machine out so there would be room for all his camping shit. Idk, there are lots of options. He's definitely an interesting guy.

There was even an article about how he never shuts up a few days ago! It's the perfect solution. When they're off the ice, anyway. ;)

i'm personally offended no one's named zach bogosian for this bracket yet.

Everything I read about Brent Burns makes me wish I could hang out with him for a day. I love that he bought his first snakes because he wanted to get over his fear and then he ended up with 300 of them, haha.

Re: Game Day Thread May 7, 2016

This is why we need to have a poll! Because I was not aware of Bogosian's eyebrows before this, but wow. His eyebrow game is strong.

Because fics in revealed collections show up when they were first posted, which might be several pages back. It's not scamming to adjust the date once to make your fic show up as the date it was revealed, but it is shady to keep doing it.

Wow, Sports Illustrated's website is spectacularly un-userfriendly. If I zoom the page enough for the text to actually be readable for me, the scrollbar disappears entirely. Good one, web designers. Good one.

“People see him and think there’s some crazy guy. I’ve got six guys in the Hockey Hall of Fame, and by far he is the most colorful, unique individual I’ve ever dealt with. And I’ve had incredible clients. He reads things. It’s not like he flies off the handle. Who sits and reads? I went back with him to Slovakia to look at Marian Gaborik’s hockey rink. He’s going 120 miles an hour. Burnsie is reading a Harry Potter book. I look at him. ‘Burnsie, are you f---ing kidding me?’ ‘What’s the big deal?’ he says."

Brent Burns: considered a weirdo by his agent because he reads.

This article about Pierre McGuire was linked in the Brent Burns one, and it's oddly fascinating. Especially since he seems to be exactly the same kind of person when he's not on camera as he is on it. I wonder how many of his colleagues secretly hate him.

Re: Hockey Articles/Media

From: (Anonymous)
That part was utterly incomprehensible to me. I thought for sure I misunderstood and he was reading while doing something that should have had his full attention, but the sentence construction doesn't really imply that. The man dresses like a cartoon, kept his own zoo, and randomly tackles people, and the anecdote the agent went with was Burns reading one time? Weird shit.

I loved it, I never knew I needed a soul-bond/amnesia mash up, but I did. It just seemed really well thought out and put together.

i've just read this fic and i have to say: realistic?? kris letang not even remembering where he's driving to after practice and needing his d-partner to keep a list in his locker, yet still playing hockey is not what i'd call realistic. i didn't continue reading after that part, so idk if that's as bad as it gets, but wow. i know some people love dark, angsty stuff, but it seemed so out of place in an otherwise pretty standard getting-together fic.

I really enjoyed the Hungarian fans singing their anthem to their team, I'd never seen it before.

Re: Fic Discussion- Still and Again

From: (Anonymous)
I started reading this and I loved it but by the half of the story I kind of lost interest and just skimmed the rest. That's usually what happens to me when I read pairings I don't care about even if the writing is great.

Re: Fic Discussion- Still and Again

From: (Anonymous)
Thank you for critiquing a fic with "IDC about it because IDC about the pairing". What a total non-waste of time and words.

Re: Fic Discussion- Still and Again

From: (Anonymous)
I liked it, and I like the pairing a lot, but I felt like some of the dramatic tension went away about halfway through the story.

Re: Fandom Venting

Yeah, I changed mine the day the collection opened, because people who just read through the tag and didn't actually go to the collection would have missed my story when it was dated a week earlier. But to keep doing it is shady, especially for less than 2,000 words of fluff (it seems more understandable for a long story that took a lot of work).

Re: Hockey Articles/Media

From: (Anonymous)
That 'cheerleader' quote might be more of a diplomatic thing, I agree. I am sure he's got some co-workers that wouldn't mind him dialing it down, but I surprised myself by actually feeling a bit more sympathetic to Pierre after reading that.

When he talks about his habit of facts-vomiting, it makes sense to me more.

“I think it’s the journey, the journey for all these guys,” he says. “That’s what matters to me the most.”

I think following prospects prior before they make it into the big show is a bit harder than in other sports. The coverage just isn't there - in the States at least - and it seems a higher percentage of guys who do get the spotlight end up busts than in other sports too. So, Pierre's reasoning makes sense.

I don't think he's very good at conveying the players' journeys usually and his asides are weirdly timed a lot and sound more showoff-y on his part than humanizing on the players. Still, some of those factoids are appreciated.
