These links and the whole discussion makes me realize I would appreciate ref/player fic, even if it wasn't an AU with ships I already ship.
It just seems like there would be a strong taboo element, which I always like. 'The guys (on the team) wouldn't like this.' Also the other refs probably wouldn't like it either. The ref struggling with the conflict of interest but having to keep the ~thing~ a secret. I think it was on Marek vs Wyshynski that I learned that a good proportion of refs were guys who weren't good enough to be players, so it's likely to have a similar dynamic in that regard to superstar/bottom 6 guys.
Man, I think I've talked myself into trying a ref/player AU. Or OMC ref ship fic haha.
