I see the Sharks a lot. Without the coloring it doesn't really LOOK like pride tape, either. It's the easiest thing in the world to go "hey, this sounds kind of dubious let me do a cursory search", especially if you're making a gifset/editing something and looking at the source video for a long time.
There's your problem. Most people aren't Kings (or Sharks) fans and don't see the Sharks a lot. Most people haven't looked closely at Jones' gloves except in the colored gif set. It's absolutely unsurprising people would think it's true.
