It's garbage in the sense that the Penguins prospect pool was/is terrible and Shanahan still didn't manage to get their best prospect. The Penguins had just drafted someone who would arguably be better than Kapanen, they had the best goalie prospect in the world at the time, and an 8th overall pick that had just proven he could play in the NHL. Shanahan couldn't get any of them.
Oh and the first was lottery-protected. They got hosed, honestly. It worked out well for them and Kapanen and the 30th overall should be fine players, but if you look at the optics Shanahan messed up big time. And IMO, if he didn't believe Kessel was a problem to keep around, he would have just taken him off the table until Pouliot at the very least was available. Keeping Kessel around until Christmas would not have done too much damage to the tank.
