Honestly, if we're tinhatting I think it's way more likely that the Bruins would have traded him for nebulous character issues + being a homophobic shitbag, given how vocally supportive of LGBTQ+ rights some very prominent Bruins' players have been. Actually, I would read the hell out of a fic where Tyler Seguin gets frozen out of the Bruins' locker room because there's a gay couple on the team and he acts like the stereotype of every oblivious "I'm not homophobic I just want to know which of you is the girl" straight bro ever.

Uh, he's definitely an established public figure in the hockey world. Maybe not the most respected one, generally, but this is probably a redeeming move in some people's eyes.

He's also widely considered a joke and Team USA's goal is not getting laughed off the ice in Toronto. Seth Jones is not crying himself to sleep over this one.

I mean, considering how they didn't want to touch Tim Thomas with a 10 foot pole after he showed his homophobic ass, this isn't too far off.

Keep telling yourself that.

DA

Hockey Twitter opinions != the NHL, or the public, wow.

Fan and media opinion of Tortorella and team USA has nothing to do with the experience of a black man working under someone with a lot of power over his career, who Jones maybe has respect for, who is happy to diminish black lives and rights? Whatever Jones thinks, I have no clue, but it's not a good thing, and Torts being a joke or cute with a kid doesn't make it or him any less bad.

I would likewise happily read the hell out of that. Not a Bruins fan but damn it, enough.

idk what point you're trying to make here.

da

That five people on twitter thinking Torts is a joke doesn't mean his words don't have influence and impact in the hockey community.

And even if everyone did universally agree that he's a joke... that has nothing to do with the fact that it's awful for him to speak as head coach representing team USA and use that platform to say things like this?

Exactly. Hanging with kids doesn't really do anything to change my opinion of a person. If I already like the person, then them+kids is adorable, if I don't then I don't care what age people they choose to spend their free time with.

I just meant that it's a cute video and he comes off as genuinely nice in it. It's the first thing that comes to mind for me when people talk about reasons that don't hate him, because it's come up in discussions of him on reddit and the like. I did not intend it as a counterpoint to what he's saying about the anthem.

Beyond his inability to keep his mouth shut my only other opinion is I wish he wasn't CBJ's head coach because there are a lot of young players on that team I'd rather he not ruin.

Speaking of Gallys, I think humvee's two are pretty good. The last one more than the first.

I still kinda want fic about the rumors they traded him because character issues + he was hanging out with the wrong crowd (that would have made him an accomplice to murder) because I'm somewhat of a terrible person.

wait accomplice to murder what now? I have not heard about this.

That was one of the things I was talking about, yes. But a bunch of other top, top US women also liked a bunch of similar tweets, too (which Twitter thought I "might like" because they did, ugh).

And ugh, I'm not saying people need to drop their favs over this or anything (like, I'm still following them, for now), but seeing people act like women's hockey is so Ideologically Pure (why should it be?) is frustrating. Someone I know tweeted about JT Brown's tweet, like "I'm excited but this is how awfully low my bar is for hockey dudes, I'm excited about a man being pro social justice, hockey dudes are terrible!!" and, like.... which of your white lady favs is doing better? The women have been terrible on this. Way to diminish the bravery of a player taking a stand. Not to make a bigger deal of a tweet than it is, but a black man publicly clapping back against a white coach's public remarks, implicitly calling Tortorella racist, when he knows very few players and coaches would agree with him, is not nothing and not proof of your "low bar," your bar is low because you and friends squee over Sidney Crosby saying "girls" instead of "guys" when that guy has never done a thing that would get him blowback, for a cause more important than himself.

(Ugh, sorry this became a rant. I thought I'd gotten it out with my vent, but I woke up to this shit on my TL and ugh...)

Pens, Sens crack up during anthems

Crosby tries his best to keep a straight face during the US anthem while Karlsson just loses it during the Canadian anthem. "Lemme hear ya!!" :D

Oh, and the Phantom of the Opera once angsted his way through the anthem!

I totally get you nonnie. I feel like certain women's hockey fans in this fandom think that liking women's hockey somehow absolves them from also being into men's hockey and all of its shit. But it's not like every woman who plays hockey is some kind of perfect social justice angel, they're just women who play professional hockey. That attitude that they're somehow ~better in terms of these things than their male counterparts is persistent though.

Only three but oh my God, these two are too cute together. They're afraid of heights! Sid can't park the truck and Nate is a terrible director! "I'm the rookie!" farewell everyone.
