I don't think people think hockey fandom should be different. But sometimes when people feel overwhelmed by all the problematic things they see, it helps them to speak about them, even if it's so much shouting into the void. Likewise, it can suck if you just want to be able to cheer for your country's team in the World Cup of Hockey without feeling like you're committing a thought crime. I get it. I don't have a solution, but I've been on both ends of that stick, and it's not pleasant all around. Maybe take a break from twitter?

I don't understand why there is a week of exhibition games leading into the World Cup of Hockey. Isn't it already an exhibition tournament?

If you're having a hard time dealing with constant reminders of hockey's participation in rape culture, racism, etc, then consider unfollowing some people and blacklisting some tags.

That kind of sucks that prompting closes before the tournament starts. What about shippy stuff that happens during the tournament? :(

I think it's to help coaches make roster decisions, like lines and goalies and such. But yeah, I agree.

I think it's just to give the teams a chance to play together before the actual tournament starts.

Just checking, but you mean that Sid/Geno isn't your OTP here, right? Because yeah, that's fair. I wish everyone could have all the fic for their OTP, containing all their preferred tropes, that their heart desires.

Before I started coming on here, I never really noticed that Sid/Geno fic was particularly OOC or cliche, or any of the myriad other complaints people seem to have. That's not to say none of those complaints are valid, but they never bothered me because I guess I was too thrilled about 40k+ fic devoted to my OTP!

I still really don't understand a lot of OOC arguments actually. As long as the author makes their case for a characterization within the context of the fic, it works for me.

I hope someone writes some really great, epic fic for your OTP, nonnie.

This is very true, there is some good stuff that's been written. I just wish it hadn't been (isn't still?) such a drastic, sudden decline. Maybe it's just fandom finding equilibrium and Sid/Geno will pick up again eventually, or maybe people are finding it hard to write a pairing with a guy who's married with a baby :\ But I agree, I appreciate the more recent setting of Sid/Geno fics! The other stuff, while I love it, has been done to death.

I wish it didn't feel like one was coming at the cost of the other, you know? And I'm not sure if that's just me feeling bummed, or if there's truth to it, but. Yeah. Why can't we have both??

Yes, my OTP is not Sid/Geno. I realized that was a awkwardly worded sentence later but decided to just let it be. There actually have been a couple of long fics for my OTP so I know I'm luckier than some rare pair fans, but the writer of them seems to have drifted either away from the pairing or out of the fandom all together. However, other people are stepping in so there's still hope. :D

The main OOC complaint I have with Sid/Geno fic is Sid the hockeybot who doesn't understand humans/emotions/sexuality, but that seems to be less popular these days, thank goodness. It just never made sense to me because he wasn't raised on a frozen pond by wolves, you know? He has been around other human beings his entire life and he's not that awkward.

There's only been two hockey fics total in 2016 to break 1k kudos, though. The other is one of Linsky's K/T fics. So that says as much about hockey in general than S/G specifically, I would think.

One of the players on my local junior team started a mental health initiative and it's kind of cool to see a player go beyond what the league mandates regarding mental health awareness.

There's just more and more rare pairs

I guess they feel like no one else is ready yet and this buys them another year or two of growth before getting a permanent pick, but I still don't really like giving the C to someone who might retire after this year.

Francis said something like that about Carolina at least, like there wasn't an obvious pick for the C and they might go without one.

Nail polish report! I got the Chrome Girl one, not the two color pack that came with decals and didn't mention a polish brand, since I usually only paint my toes and wtf would I do with decals.

I'm not the best judge of nail polish quality, but it seems fine - better than drug store brands, at least. Here's a picture: https://i.imgur.com/0B8gdIR.jpg (I took it off right away, so ignore the shitty aplication). That's two coats, as the first was a bit patchy. The color doesn't quite match the logo on my boxer pj pants, but it matches the ring on my cheesy earrings almost exactly.

It also didn't come off completely cleanly and now I have a bit of a green ring on the edges of my finger, but I can probably blame that on my shitty application.

This is what a lot of people wanted, the fall of the juggernauts. The problem is that with everyone spread out, there's less community and fewer people to cheerlead/support your rare pair efforts because they probably like another rare pair more than your rare pair. People don't want to write 60k+ words knowing 5 people are going to read it.

Big fandoms can sustain juggernauts and rare pairs. Smaller fandoms die when they get spread thin like this.

Raised Lutheran, never go to church when I'm not visiting but still sort of believe. My parents are pretty involved with their church, and the three of us have a family grace. When we used to do the big mom's side get-together a different adult would have to come up with a brief prayer before meals on the spot. Basically it's almost a good manners thing imo.
