I'm a DV survivor, and one of the nonnies who was all "I really hope RL Galchenyuk is getting some hugs/counseling and I *want* DSP/Galchenyuk h/c fic but I fail to see how to do it in a manner that won't make me want to puke" a post or two ago. When I saw this come up on my dash I wanted to scream because it was exactly what I did NOT want.

(It doesn't help I hate Brendan Gallagher and think he's an off-ice asshole. I want Galchenyuk out of Montreal for a lot of other reasons, but one of the shallow ones is just "better teammate shipping options please?")

That's one of the big reasons I want Galchenyuk out of Montreal, too.

Yeah, this is a blast from like three years ago. Not that it doesn't turn up occasionally, but fic today plays a lot more on his captain status and other things.

Don't worry you're not alone with the shallow reasoning. Not a big fan of Weber pairing, but I'll take him over Gallagher. Too bad he was not selected for team NA so many options would have been available. Hoping he'll go the Worlds now.

TBL fans on tumblr are what got me shipping JT Brown/Cedric Paquette (they'd be pretty together, and I am also shallow. They also joke around at warm-ups and such, so there's a tiny bit of canon).

1) I think most anti-juggernaut people wanted the fall of the current juggernauts, which is different than saying they don't want any popular pairings to exist whatsoever.

2) If people are really drifting from juggernauts en mass, there's probably a reason. The best writers aren't there anymore, or the fandom's gotten stale and wanky, or one half of the pairing has been accused of a sex crime, or the people being shipped are getting older and settling down, or the fandom is in a transition period between old and new guards. You can't force people to sustain consistent, high-quality output for a particular pairing for some nebulous good of fandom, and you definitely can't make them if that fandom wasn't ever the one they wanted or one they've since outgrown.

3) I think it's generally a positive thing that there are more players and more dynamics being written, and if the fandom's also shrinking, that's likely not the direct result of more people reading and/or writing rarepairs, especially since the most popular teams are still the most popular. I also think the claim that shippers of one rarepair won't cheerlead/support other rarepair shippers is somewhat dubious.

No, I'm just saying I rather have Weber/Galchenyuk than Gallagher/Galchenyuk. Not that anyone else is shipping them.

that pic made me want biz/mcdavid/dstrome, actually. (maybe biz has a role in them going from bff's to mcstrome and they think threesomes are appropriate repayment? or maybe they just like threesomes period, because i would totally believe the sketchy gossip that they've done one together irl.)

also, biz in pr is a terrifying but potentially awesome thought.

i'm still holding out hope for "paul bissonnette, #12 for your vegas whatevers!" (i will buy a jersey or at least some merch if that happens, meme, that is how much i ship biz/vegas.)

What do you do when meme discusses a story you wrote nonnies?? Skip it? Read it as the most honest concrit? Valiantly defend your writing decisions while pretending they aren't your decisions?? Hide your eyes in shame??

It's happened, and I read it. Some of it I actually agreed with (I did miss the one thing I shouldn't have missed) and some of it I disregarded totally. If you're going to read it then you have to sort through the concrit and figure out what's useful, because not all of it is all the time.

Re your third point, I see a lot more Pens rarepairs fic now, even if there's less Sid/Geno. I tend to think if you're a fan of a team, you'll read a lot of stuff for that team, or cheerlead efforts for fic for that team.

I usually avoid the thread the rest of the day and survey afterwards. Nothing's been that big a deal; I enjoyed the extra comments and took the occasional finicky complaints with a grain of salt.

I've been mentioned before but have not had serious criticism or even more than a line or so of commentary. On other anon memes, I've had mixed reviews or criticism. I think you have to be okay sorting through what's useful to you and what isn't. If it's OTT criticism that's weirdly personal or where the person doesn't have anything specific, it's best ignored. If they bring up something, maybe they're right, maybe there's something you could have done better but it's not what they think it is, maybe it's something you knew about but couldn't fix in time, maybe they're wrong and no other reader will feel the same, etc.

I've had criticism that seemed to be based in specific personal experiences, which I easily disregarded. You can't control how everyone interprets your fic.

i would read weber/galchenyuk (or price/galchenyuk) porn but i cannot bring myself to actually ship either of those things *romantically*, which limits my interest.

(i still want improbable trade #2 "galchenyuk for ribeiro". nash gets a legit 2c, ribeiro gets to blend in with the rest of the shittiness in montreal, galchenyuk probably gets pk hugs and *definitely* has better teammate shipping options, too bad this *is* still rl.)

Yeah, I think, at best, juggernauts for popular teams spur rarepairs for that same team. I don't think a flourishing juggernaut for one team necessarily translates to good things for all rare pairings. I think if anything, rare team people are more likely to read a variety of teams and people. But in general fans of a team will be supportive of fic written for that team.

Sometimes with things like this I have a total "fuck it, it's fiction" mentality. If there's someone on the Preds you want to ship Galchenyuk with, well, now you could have Subban or Weber (or both!) playing matchmaker. It would be cracky, but it would still work if you wanted it to.

What others have said - you have to be able to separate potentially useful crit from personal reactions. If you feel like you can't do that, then you might want to skip or have a friend check out the thread and vet it for you first.

Personally, I really like getting unfiltered reader reactions to my stuff, whatever those reactions are, but lots of people feel differently.

Pretend I didn't see it, although I did have one comment here where I wanted to reply and say I KNOW I KNOW I TRIED BUT I CAN'T WRITE PORN SORRY FOR DISAPPOINTING YOU, lmao. (I obviously did not.)
