I'm not gonna lie and say it hasn't considerably diminished whatever enthusiasm I had for team NA. It's starting to seem like the whole point is marketing McDavid.

I think some of that perception probably comes from the feeling that someone writing a pairing you aren't interested in could be expending that effort to write a pairing you like instead (see: attitudes towards oflights).

I don't know about this. To use your example, I really think a lot of the entitlement people show about oflights switching ships is that she left a juggernaut, and she switched to something that supposedly breaks the juggernaut up. I've seen people subtweeting to that effect a lot and the comments on here sometimes seem coded that way. It's not just "ew I hate that ship", it's also "poor Geno, she needs to be nicer to him."

I sometimes wonder if Sid/Nate would be bigger if someone with less fandom baggage coming from a lesser known pairing started writing it and promoting it the way she does. So many people hate Sid/Nate because they see it at the expense of Sid/Geno. And that kind of resentment doesn't build across different rare pairs IMO.

Same tbh. Of course this was a cash grab tournament from the start, but it's hard to get excited if it's going to be a blatant cash grab and a blatant marketing campaign.

I'm pretty sure people who hate the juggernaut being split up will hate the splitting up even if it's coming from a NNF. There might be less sense of betrayal, though.

Saad plays for CBJ now, which is like being dead, as far as Hockey Canada is concerned.

Yeah, I kind of just realized that most of my excitement about this team was because Team USA is such a mess and I was happy to have a chance to root for some younger American guys (most of whom I actually like a lot). But I'm never going to be able to root for Canada in an international tournament and the fact that this team is shaping up to be Future Canadian Olympic Team (oh, and some Americans, ignore them tho) is a real bummer. I should have expected this.

AYRT - I do engage a certain amount with tumblr but I limit that, because I find it too much to absorb.

Like the other anon I entered the fandom through recs on FFA and I had no idea who the people were, but there was more to read for that pairing than say a rare pair. But the players I ended up liking most and the team I follow aren't the ones from the first fic I read. I am sure if I had connected to one of the teams with a juggernaut pairing my perceptions would be different.

That has been my impression from day one. I don't think McDavid is the only reason why this U23 team exists, but I think having him as the main attraction, which wouldn't be case even if he got selected for Team Canada, was a pretty big factor in the creation of Team NA.

Oh, I see what you mean about Sid/Nate and I think you're right. But I also think that the attitude of "Why is she writing Sid/Nate when she could/should be writing S/G instead?" is a big part of it, too, and I feel like I've seen lots of comments to that effect here (idk about twitter). Also, though, my view of oflights' particular situation is probably being colored by her fandom history, because she got accusations that she was killing TSN fandom when she transitioned to hockey and S/G. Idk the way people talk about oflights is just generally crazy. Still, I think it's not just an oflights thing but a more general feeling that fandom sometimes has when a popular author stops writing for a certain pairing/in a certain fandom.

As an American I'm pretty freaking annoyed. Call me crazy but I do believe there is a bias going on.

I think there is. Couturier is fine, and he has the most experience, but McDavid and Ekblad are the faces of the future of Hockey Canada.

same here

& I'm actually kinda shocked that they didn't, mostly because I definitely thought that Saad or Trouba might get one

S/G fans don't virulently hate Sid/Claude, though, except maybe a small amount of Pens fans who don't like it because of the Pens/Flyers rivalry? But you'd think that Giroux being a Flyer/the pairing's most popular fic being written predominantly by Flyers fans would make the pairing less popular than Sid/Nate amongst S/G fans.

Oh yeah, for sure, but the reality of 95% of their interviews/marketing/etc being about him is still a little jarring for somebody who doesn't especially like him and was excited about the team anyways (oops).

NA

I've been annoyed about Team NA since the Galchenyuk snub, ugh.

Re: World Cup of Hockey

McDavid has played 45!!! NHL!!! Games!!! It doesn't matter how many interviews I read about his leadership skills or whatever the fuck, I firmly believe that he wouldn't be getting picked for this (or Oilers captain) if he wasn't Connor McDavid, future best player in the league. That's my tinhat conspiracy theory and I'm sticking to it.

(also all those quotes from the Friedman piece about how the Oilers had to trade Hall because he had too much personality and was overshadowing McDavid. If he's such a natural leader why was that an issue?? huh???)

I am neither American or Canadian and it looks pretty biased to me too.

I agree 100% with your first paragraph, but for the second, wasn't that specifically one player speculating? I remember it being kind of an aside in one article, but admittedly I forget specifics approximately 5 seconds after reading. Were there more?

Oh, I wonder if this is at least as much a question of how people engage in fandom, then. The reason I feel so strongly that fandom had a wide sense of community was how impossible it was for me to ignore the juggernaut pairing I didn't care for, not being attached to a juggernaut pairing/team. Even people I followed who weren't attached to that juggernaut-containing team frequently engaged with the players/pairing and their fans, even some who claimed not to like one of the players involved. But my problem with fandom was also the same as my general problem with tumblr, which is the impossibility of shielding yourself from certain content/people without cutting yourself off from what you want to use tumblr for in the first place. Obviously that wouldn't be the case for someone who engages less in that platform and who mainly reads and writes fic, and I hadn't thought of that.

You might be right, I thought it was mentioned multiple times but I might be confusing it with what was said about PK. I think Friedman talked about it again later on tv though and clarified that he thinks that was a significant factor.

Is this in response to people saying Couturier was born in the US and has dual citizenship? He considers Canada his home, tho...

Seriously. I like the kid a lot, and Team North America is the only thing about this tournament I'm legitimately excited about, but it's getting on my nerves how they are being marketed as "McDavid's team".
