Oh thanks, I didn't see the tv thing! I tend to trust Friedman's judgment, so if he also believes it I'd give it more weight. I thought from the beginning McDavid was a big factor in what made Hall expendable, but the idea of getting rid of him in part because management didn't want competing leadership is new to me, and it really rubs me the wrong way. It's just such a dumb reason to get rid of someone.

Sid/Claude taps into very different relationship dynamics, with the enemies who became lovers thing. Sid/Nate & Sid/Geno tap into somewhat similar dynamics of both Nate and Geno adoring Sid. Really, the thing that distinguishes Nate from Geno is being younger and Canadian, and I can understand what's annoying about that.

But there are some who really hated Sid/Ovi, when people still wrote that. I can't really peek into people's brains and know why they dislike Sid/Nate but are okay with Sid/Giroux, but I don't think it's just because of a BNF promoting the former. It's not like disliking a ship that splits up your ship is not commonly disliked across all of fandom.

I... don't agree with this at all. I don't think this line of thinking is the cause of antipathy towards Sid/Nate, I think it's more likely to be the result of it...

I want one of the not countries to win, just because it would be funny. I like more players on Team NA, but Europe winning would be so unlikely it would be a delight.

Yeah, tbf I think the player (and Friedman) were framing it more in terms of personality than leadership? Like "Hall was a big personality and needed to go". But if Hall's personality alone was enough to overshadow Connor "natural leader" McDavid in the room then it seems like McDavid's personality can't stand on its own? idk

Disliking a ship that splits up your ship isn't uncommon, but it's strange to see the brunt of that dislike focused what seems exclusively on one of the rarest pairings that does that. Did people really hate Sid/Ovi in the same out of proportion way they hate Sid/Nate? I never had that impression, but I wasn't around fandom back when it was more popular than it is now.

This surprises me also. I mean one of those 3 goalies won a Stanley cup. And I realize he didn't do it alone. But wow. That is quite the hill you've chosen nonnie.

Agreed. If anything, I think "big personality" is an even stupider reason to trade someone, but I am So Done with hockey's weird insistence on conformity to begin with.

But also I agree, I by no means think oflights is the only reason people hate Sid/Nate! Maybe one of many. I just don't think "splitting up the big OTP" explains all the hate either.

I'm saying that "Nate is like Geno except younger and Canadian and that's annoying" sounds like something one would think if they resented Nate and Sid/Nate, more than it sounds like an explanation for why people dislike Sid/Nate. Because I don't at all agree that Nate = Geno except younger and Canadian.

I've decided to root for Europe just because it would be funny if they won.

USA is a mess but I have a lot of faves on Sweden so they might be my non-Europe fave.

On top of being irritated about the all-Canadians thing as an Oilers nonnie I'm feeling very pearls clutch-y about this plus the fact that apparently it's now a foregone conclusion that he'll also be the Oilers captain.

It's so much pressure on someone who had a pretty terrible injury last year and only played half a season. Like I know he's mentally strong and whatever but like. Can we give the kid a break?? Does he need to save the world right this second??

I'm just really really tired of Greg Wyshynski acting like a 12-year old about them. He had to say about 50 times in the latest Marek vs. Wyshynski podcast that he was rooting for Team T 'n' A. Strangely enough, I don't think I heard him make that joke at all on the newest Puck Soup, so maybe someone already told him to knock it off.
