lol, I had a long conversation with a friend this weekend about how we hate any/all Barstool-created memes, including Harambe and "Saturdays are for the boys" but they're inescapable because Barstool has a weird cultlike influence on almost all the guys we know. And Taylor Hall, apparently.

On top of the other suggestions, football players don't have guaranteed contracts, I think. They can be cut at any time. Think about how many hockey players would have stopped playing by now, if their teams didn't have to find a trade partner for their now-inconvenient contracts.

Jesus. I know his dev track didn't allow for a proper frat stage, but come on.

He had trouble all of last year, too, so Team USA should not have been surprised. He's going at the level he's been going.

I'm super curious about the dude wearing birks. Who are you birk-boy and how did you end up with this crowd??

Devils social has been doing SAFTB posts for a while now, so at least he's on #brand?

Dave Lozo would like a word about who created the Harambe meme.

Barstool is famous for ripping off other people's shit.

I'm pretty sure the NHL has too.

SA
Looking at this again I appreciate how he resolutely stuck his hand in his pocket for this picture despite wearing tiny shorts with no real pocket? That's dedication to the awkward Canadian hockey player aesthetic if I've ever seen it

True, but he isn't the reason every athlete/frat bro/ average dude in his 20s thinks Harambe is the Peak of Humor. He doesn't have that kind of influence, lol.

Omg, nonnie. I would love it if you didn't refrain, tbh.

(as a Youth I might have read too many teen mags where they analyze body language to predict how long celebrity couples will last)

AYRT

I mean, amateur and shallow. Them thumbs are in -> fratty posturing covering submissive tendencies -> someone's gotta fuck 'em and break that facade.

I approve of this analysis.

So there's a fic I want to write. Except that I feel like the plot kind of hinges on the main character having an actual relationship instead of some sort of gen thing -- but there's no basis for a ship with anyone at all. So I either have to hope and wait social media or something provides something shippy, or pull a completely random pair out of nowhere. Meh.

Re: Writing Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-09-13 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Who's the main character? Maybe someone on meme knows about his secret and long-hidden bromance.

Re: Writing Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-09-13 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I ended up going with a more or less random ship, and while the relationship is more a necessary demon than the focus, I still kept finding ways for it to prop up story once I committed and got over my initial reluctance of writing a 25k fic with-not-about a pairing I had no real ties to. If I had to do it again, it'd probably go even better in hockey since the usual six degrees of separation is narrowed down to, like, two degrees within the hockey world.

I need it to be a teammate and he's fairly new to the team (traded last summer and spent most of last year in the AHL) so I doubt there's anyone on meme who knows more than I do -- I've stalked his public social media accounts pretty thoroughly, lmao

When would I have to beta? I might be available for SPAG/grammar but I'm also traveling a bit so it depends when you need the story.

Re: Writing Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-09-13 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Could it be a relationship with one of the prospects or callups that was up and down last year?

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-09-13 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
People on twitter LITERALLY just asked themselves how to get the wife out of the way... Oh, just pair her w/Other Woman so there's no problem with the otp

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-09-13 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
If it's an AU where they aren't exes, but are just friends and she's famous for reasons beside being married to him I'm cool with it. But if it's not an AU, or they are exes in the fic, or she's not famous on her own, it gives me pause.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-09-13 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
I don't do hockey rpf twitter so I have no context, but if they're talking about fic ... why not write a universe where the guy didn't get married? This isn't that difficult.

Re: Writing Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-09-13 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
Probably really close to the deadline (Sunday?) because my time management is the worst, lol, which is why I feel bad about even asking anyone to beta. :(
If you want to, you can give me a sock email? And if I manage to finish it at a reasonable time and you can check it if you have time. If you don't it's no big deal, just leave it.
