I know that too. I just didn't get into it. :)

Interesting. The ESPN announcers just said that the Team NA players hadn't been told by their coaches that they had to win in regulation yesterday. On the one hand, the players could have looked it up themselves/should have tried to win in regulation regardless/etc., but on the other hand that might have been worth mentioning somewhere in the presumably motivational speeches before the third period.

Threadfail, I meant it as a reply to ayrt!

The Rangers seem fairly close. I know Chris Kreider has talked about it in multiple interviews, and in videos on the website they mention visiting each other (Hayes went to visit Marc Staal in Thunder Bay as well as McDonagh and Stepan; several Rangers visited Zuccarello in Norway last year). There's been fan mentions of Lundqvist/Girardi/Staal going pumpkin picking with their families, and I've seen posts of people who see them out together in NYC bars fairly.

A lot of them were college teammates, though, which probably helps?

My strong Hogwarts feelings are usually about how x character would be exempt from the whole system, either because they're not from the U.K. or they're a mystical creature that would lurk in the Forbidden Forest instead, but I do feel that Slytherin is wrong for Ovi.

I didn't dismiss Ravenclaw because I don't think he's willing to learn or because I don't think he's smart, or because I don't know about his degree, etc., but because I was thinking of Ravenclaw as valuing book-learning and intelligence more than other things. I think Hogwarts sorting is supposed to be about what people value most, and the thing that comes across over and over again (at least for me) is that Ovi is pretty big on family and loyalty, etc. (I think "devotion" may have been the word he used in the interview I'm thinking of.)

Like I said, I've talked myself into being able to accept Ravenclaw for Ovi. I'm now at any house but Slytherin. If he has to go to Hogwarts at all..

Yup they thought they were through when they scored. I guess they would expect their coaches to tell them though and not look it up.

Yeah, it's so weird that the coaching staff didn't mention it at any point to the players. What happened there, the coaches didn't know, they didn't think it was important, or they thought it was better not to bring it up?

I saw some people bring up the possiblity that the coaching staff thought telling the players might lead to some reckless plays and risking too much in the third. I don't know if that's better or even worse than them legitimately not knowing what it would take to clinch the semifinals. Either way, it's a shitty way to run a team.

Re: Game day thread 22 Sept 2016

ayrt Yeah, I knew the players had thought they were through, but to me the way the announcers said it, it sounded like someone on the coaching staff decided not to tell them before the game, or didn't think it mattered to tell them.

And the players don't seem pleased about it? Gaudreau, MacKinnon, Saad all commented. I know McDavid said he personally wouldn't have played differently if he knew, but McLellan also coaches his NHL team.

The coaching staff didn't pull the goalie, or instill any sense of urgency in the last couple minutes of the game. Even if they did know they needed to win in regulation to clinch (and aren't just blindly covering their asses), there's no way they knew the other scenarios, or they would have known that at that point there was practically nothing to risk.

I knew that, too.

I think its silly to invent an entirely new school with entirely different houses for the purposes of writing a HP AU.

Lol, they had the fourth line out with like two minutes to go. They fucked up somewhere, even if exactly where is hard to pinpoint.

NA

Aww, I think it'd be fun (and you wouldn't even have to invent a school, Durmstrang is supposed to be the Slavic school (in Scandinavia???) ... I'd rather invent one tho lol)

Yeah, that too, lol. And after insisting on shortening the bench last game too. It's hard to pinpoint exactly how ignorant they were, but it's pretty certain they didn't understand the advancement scenario.

I meant to ask this yesterday -

On the Thornton/Sekera coincidental minors, why did they give Sekera a double minor instead of consecutive ones? I have to assume there's something about Thornton having to be unavailable during the power play, but if the reason for the pp is Thornton's injury, I don't understand why they wouldn't have played 4 on 4, then gone to a Canada pp after two minutes. As far as i can tell, unless there's a pre-existing penalty, coincidental minors don't have to be played at 5 on 5 until there's a whistle to let the guys out of the box.

I may need an ELI5 here. Or to be told "it's at the ref's discretion." I did in fact try reading the rules for coincidental minors, but it's possible I just can't comprehend cause I'm not willing to mute the audio of this game.

I think if you're using "values book-learning the highest" as your criterion for Ravenclaw, it's hard to find fits within pro hockey. By nature of being a professional athlete, they've devoted their lives to something that's easier to finagle a fit for loyalty/bravery/ambition than learning. So I don't disagree with you, but I think that if House balance among hockey players is something I'm going for, my metric might shift to "values book-learning significantly more than the average hockey player seems to".

Re: Ask Meme

From: (Anonymous)
I didn't hear Lombardi's interview, but I heard a chunk of Torts on my way in to work this morning (and McLellan on my lunch) and the Canadian focus was sort of question & questioner related. I hope the interviews go up online somewhere, I'd be willing to transcribe them for meme.

Well, you literally said differently, there's no way that anyone could tell that by "doctorate" you meant "not a doctorate."

At least a few other high-level Russian hockey players/Russian athletes have degrees (I think from the same school as Ovi, though not advanced ones). Kuznetsov is one for sure. I think it's possible that they value having a degree more than most North American players.

I think you could make a case for Ravenclaw for especially cerebral players -- ones known to spend a lot of time studying other hockey players, for example. Though like most of these things, if you're in the NHL, you probably have the ability to learn/study hockey, ambition, a strong work ethic, and courage (or at least the willingness to take a beating), etc.

Re: Fic Discussion - aparecium by oops_ohdear

Durmstrang's whole situation is weird, but I think it would be a better fit for a hockey HP AU. It's actually in a region that a lot of hockey players come from, and we know it also accepts students from as far as Bulgaria, so it would make sense for Russian students to attend. (I can't remember if there were any non-Brits at Hogwarts at all, but that could be my memory.)

But since we know very little about Durmstrang, using it as a setting wouldn't be too different from inventing a school from whole cloth anyway.

Up through the 2014-15 season, the Kings team had a reputation for having a very close tight-knit locker room in the beats, but also nationally/internationally. I remember a lot of national US-ian and Canadian reporters even using it as a narrative about their 2014 Stanley Cup run where some of them were calling them the closest team in the league. There has been significant turnover in the locker room in the past year and a half, though, so I don't know if it still goes.
