Well, now that the first page of Blueliners is out, I can officially say I'm not impressed by the art.

Oh, that sucks.

Hi, folks. We're about an hour after my previously stated deadline for new players to e-mail me if they wanted to join the Deke fantasy hockey leagues.

At the moment, we have one league of 10 players and one league of 9 players. That means we still have room for one new GM.

I really would like to lock the leagues at noon tomorrow (NA EDT), as promised, so that everyone who has been looking forward to starting their list-making with their draft order in mind can do so at the expected time.

Please, if anyone would like to join, now's your chance! I promise it's not scary! Either the nonny whose team was erroneously deleted, or anyone else who wishes to sign up, please send me an e-mail at DDHLCommish@gmail.com some time in the next 11ish hours so we can get this show on the road! If we get more than one, that will be great (so long as it's one or three or five ;))!

Also, GMs who are already signed up, please ask any of your friends to join whom you think might be interested.

Thanks!

Isn't it by a completely different person? I don't think it's a spinoff.

Oh, wow, luv the Malkin speak for Yakupov *rolls eyes out of skull*

His English is pretty damn good. Listening to five seconds of one of his interviews would steer you away from that bit of stupidity pretty hard.

You're not alone. I remember her from about ten years ago from Eminem fandom which was tiny and always desperate for fic - she was a competent writer yet something always rubbed me the wrong way. *shrugs*

Huh, you're right. Wouldn't have guessed that from the subject matter or the art style or the format or the manner of hyping or the fandom overlap, but the more you know, I guess.

I read the homeless fic on a recommendation from meme, and have reread it once, which is a thing I usually only do for rare pairs, but I don't follow her tumblr and haven't started reading the apocafic or whatever that she's posting.

I think most of what I like is that her OCs and ensemble characters seemed really sensibly human and imperfect, which was just enough of a foil for Tyler and Jamie's coping methods - a narrower gap that the usual Perfect Voice of Reason vs impossibly stupid miscommunication/pining.

My memory of her prose is that it was perfectly adequate, competently descriptive, and didn't get in the way of the story, which is by far what I prefer for a work of that length.

I haven't read, but I instinctively hiss at any mention of other Russians being written with fanon Malkin speak.

So, hissssss.

I didn't mind the art that much, but there was so much dialogue. Admittedly I am more used to physical comics these days and haven't read a webcomic in a few years, so it might just be a stylistic trend that I'm not used to but all that text was overwhelming. I might just revisit it in a couple of months if people say it's good. Could just be growing pains.

Since we are now at two leagues of 10 teams each, and all deadlines have passed, I'm going to give a special treat to the night owls and early risers.

I have just locked the leagues and the draft order is visible on the league overview page under the "Draft" tab and then "Draft Results." You also likely have a note from Yahoo with a link on your league overview page (Right next to the Deke Dangle Hockey League _ header).

The order was set randomly and is in the snake format, meaning that the person who picks first will not pick again until #20 and then again at #21, and so on. All rounds are laid out on the Draft Results page, to assist in your Pre-Draft Player Rankings settings.

Go forth, rank, and mock draft!

...me too. I genuinely am looking forward to the next chapter.

The layout is in a way I can't read it normally and have to open every picture in a seperate tab and I'm too annoyed about it to actually read it right now lol

It's very.... flat?

I'm withholding judgment on hockey accuracy so far. But yeah, not impressed by the art at all.

:D I know what I'm doing this Saturday morning.

Oooh I'm 10th, that throws off my rankings IMMEDIATELY. I have some planning to do.

The font is exactly the same as CP, right? Is that just a really popular font? I don't read any other webcomics, so I have no idea. And I agree with the person who said it could've been by the same artist, the style seems super similar.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
It's not the same font. I like the one used for CP better, as it has a character that matches the style of the art. The one Blueliners used looks like it could be a pretty generic or readily available one, the first thing it put me in mind of was manga scanlations.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
As already said I don't think its a spinoff, it is the same artist who did that series of hockey portraits the style of which I preferred to this new comic. I am confused how other people are actually reading it though. The panels show up way too small for me to read the text on my monitor.

Re: Things You Wouldn't Say Unanon

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I read it on my ipad and didn't have a problem with the text size.

Weird, on my laptop screen it is basically unreadable unless you open each image of the photoset in another window (clicking to enlarge on the dashboard is not enough) so you can zoom-in.

SA

I just went to the comic's blog and the creator mentioned that people on the mobile app are having the best results reading the comic, so I guess she is aware of the problem.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 12:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Based on the artist's earlier work I would have agreed that she was more talented, but I don't really feel like the comic features the stuff I like about her style. It would be hard to have the same level of detail in a comic, but I feel like it does not have the same charm.

Gotta say, that is the cleanest, whitest arena I've ever seen.

It's funny that you think that, because the people on my dash/TL most excited about Blueliners are pretty much the same people who are mad at omgcp and how much $$ the creator is making while not updating. But yeah, just because it's another hockey comic doesn't mean it's a spinoff.

I've seen check please fan accounts (with like CP related handles and icons) who are pretty excited about it too, its not all spite fans.
