I'm actually surprised Dallas only got 4, I thought they were more popular?

I enjoyed Dave Lozo's take on it:

Ugh, every single fucking Pittsburgh game, of fucking course. I don't know why I even bother anymore.

Bergevin at risk of becoming a parody of himself as the Canadiens sign... Bobby Farnham...

Bergevin may not have a lot of choices. If you've got any options at all, you're probably not choosing Montreal this off-season.

It could probably have had its own thread, if you're seriously asking. We usually have quite a lot to say.

The solution to not having a lot of choices is not to sign a guy who's not even replacement-level to your club's 50th contract... It's a telling signing when it comes to what Bergevin is looking for in players and the direction he's trying to lead the Habs in, is what I'm saying.

Accurate. I guess it's probably a blessing in disguise that they have so many Chicago games, since the NBC announcers like to bring Chicago up constantly. They might as well actually be playing in the game and give them reason. /bitter Central fan

It's not like players particularly like going to Montreal anyway, and then a shitty season happens and bad moves that make it obvious that the front office sucks too, so who'd want to? lol, laughing through my Habs related pain </3

lol, this is too true. The number of times they randomly brought up PKane last season was infinite... So maybe I should take it as a blessing that NBC seem to hate my teams. :)

Evander Kane has apparently been arrested?

Yeah, there's a bit more at this link:

Apparently a "misdemeanor criminal trespass" charge.

Idk. I'm glad something's happening, but this seems so small compared to what he did.

As a Dallas fan, the team is super popular in RPF fandom and pretty unpopular in wider hockey fandom. I find people like the idea of the style of hockey and there were a lot of 'this is what hockey needs' articles last year, but for example Dallas flairs are pretty rare outside of r/dallasstars

Also, we have a love/hate relationship with national broadcasting because we want to get it to grow the popularity of the team, but we always hate dudes who aren't Razor and Ralph/Strader calling Stars games.

It's frustrating that out of everything he did, this is what he gets charged with. But meme also talked about what charges could or couldn't plausibly be brought against him, based on technicalities of the law, and a criminal trespass charge (for what he actually did) seems to me like maybe they thought they couldn't stick him with the charges he deserved, so they found something criminal to charge him with.

If Hawks fans on twitter could stop going "lol sucks to suck," that would be great. Having upwards of half the games on national television including the NHL Network means everything is blacked out and that's way too much Pierre on my television. It's also a questionable business model.

No McDavid on NBC? Dallas only four times? Subban only twice? It's bizarre and blatant selling out of the best product and future growth in favor of immediate ratings.

This person from Channel 4 seems to have a bit more details:

@nalinashapiro4: #BreakingNews @evanderkane_9 turned himself in, charged w/1 misdemeanor, 4 harassment violations. Sources say pictures in bar are evidence

So at least a bit more than just trespassing?

na

Yeah, outside of RPF, I get the impression that the Stars are relatively well-liked among non-casual fans (because of their style of play, star players, etc.), but that's not the same as having a wide draw in terms of national television-viewing audience.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the 4 harassment violations are the non-criminal charges we already heard about.

da

I was probably misled by the already mentioned "oh look how fun their hockey is" articles. Now thinking about it I don't know why I made the mistake to equate "fun hockey" with "popular on tv", lol. Oh well, one day...

My team is in the Atlantic division, and because of his injury last season I've never actually seen McDavid play other than in highlight clips. I'll probably make more of an effort this year to watch when they play the Oilers, but it does feel like they're missing out on an opportunity to show off their next big star. I guess NBC won't care though until the Oilers are good enough to command a national audience.

If there's four, though, that might mean the third woman came forward. Maybe more charges will follow.

McDavid does not strike me as a guy who will ever be popular in the US, no matter how good he gets. He just doesn't have a star personality. Besides, last year they did have some Oilers games, and look how that turned out: no McDavid anyway.

I suspect the schedule was mostly finalized before the Subban trade.

Also, I'm not sure that trying to get the best ratings is "bizarre."
