I'm honestly curious how those smaller clubs can manage with the costs. Some have arenas only seating 5500 people and... how exactly can they make enough money from that? Even assuming they sell out every game, it seems umlikely.

And they can't make that much money from tv. These are the figures I got from googling real quick.

The Kontinental Hockey League has given a further boost to its teams and their fans with a payment of 114m rubles (approximately $1,827,200) to be shared among all member clubs. (...)

Of the total, 40% is to be shared equally among the KHL member clubs and a further 30% is allocated in direct proportion to demand among the TV audience. The remaining 30% is performance-related (...).

This means that last season’s champion, SKA, receives 15.2m rubles (approx. $244,600) and regular season winner CSKA is handed a total of 10.6m ($170,500). Beaten Gagarin Cup finalist Ak Bars has the consolation of 8,7m ($140,000) and last season’s surprise Eastern Conference finalist, Sibir, has a windfall of 4.2 m ($67,500).

from here: http://en.khl.ru/news/2015/10/08/237668.html

I just have the feeling that if the clubs don't have some big payer(s) backing them and willing to burn money for years, they'll be bankrupt sooner rather than later. It just makes me sad. :(

Re: Exchanges, etc - hockey rarepair exchange

The collection says there were 107 last time. So there's quite a drop, but there's also been a big rise in other exchanges - team-specific ones, the monthly flashfic exchange, the poly exchange.

Ugh, I forgot you could just check, thank you, nonny!

That's true about there being a lot of exchanges. It's neat if there's more now, I really like the variety. (I have to admit though that I don't remember how many different ones there were last year, I wasn't really paying attention then...)

If the owners are rich enough, they may view them as more of a hobby or vanity project than an investment.

I'm thinking I might delete my sign-up. There's still not anyone I can write for, and the person who would be able to write for me now has other options for that pairing. I'm also feeling way too lazy to think of prompts or write a letter.

I hope there's another holiday one. But I like all the flashfic exchanges a lot.

There's one pairing I want to write that doesn't have any offers, and I just don't have time to devote to an exchange.

I hope they write a letter so I can treat.

Someone else requested (and offered, I assume it's the same person!) my super rare rarepair and I'm hoping SO HARD to be matched with them. I have other pairings I could match on, I think, but this one would make me eternally happy, lol. Please, ao3 matching gods, make it so!!

SA

Aww, just after posting this comment I checked the spreadsheet and I guess they still request it, but no longer offer. :( Why so fickle!

Oh well, I'm still hoping I get to write it at least!

Also If I remember correctly at least a few KHL teams and other Russian sports teams are owned by large corporations (eg CSKA Moscow).

I'm most familiar with how Euroleague Women's works, but there most teams are owned and sponsored by companies running the gamut from investment banks to mining and energy, plus the occasional hobbyist billionaire. The cost of owning a sports team is a drop in the bucket for them, so turning a profit is a nonissue. The entire team is like a big ad campaign/outreach program; the money's expected to be a sunk cost.

But I don't know if that's how it works for the majority of KHL teams, especially outside of Russia. The number of clubs that fold for financial reasons points to only a few. It's certainly not a popular model in North America or western Europe.

SA Sorry, forgot to mention I was a DA above.

I wanted to add that corporate ownership/bankrolling is also common for Chinese sports clubs. A quick google didn't turn up any details on who or what owns the new KHL Beijing team, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's how they're funded.

This is a great jersey. I'd wear it. (I kind of want it as a t shirt, honestly.)
