When you don't think you can possibly love Jenny Scrivens more than you already do, and then this.

I recently looked at Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump's twitter profiles while logged into the twitter where I follow hockey folks, just to see who followed them. And while I (unfortunately) found quite a few players following Trump, Jenny Scrivens was the sole player who followed Hillary.

Nah, Zenon Konopka, Robert Bortuzzo, Janine Weber, Meghan Duggan, Erik Condra, Sheldon Souray, Angela Ruggiero, Zach Boychuk, Anthony Bitetto and Theo Fleury all follow Hillary as well. Also, no doubt there's a lot of Trump supporters among hockey players, but a lot of those follows are from when Trump was mostly known as a reality TV figure, or because players met him in non-political contexts back then (which still doesn't make it great, but is different from having followed Trump in, like, the last few days or weeks or even months, like some other players have done.)

This election has been great for me wrt weeding out repellent hockey people, and vindicating the ones I already loved.

Meesh Crechiolo, Bruce Arthur and Mark Lazerus forever tbh. They've all been pretty anti-Trump in recent days and it's like praise hands emojis everywhere in my head.

Tbf, there are an awful lot of people this election who plan on voting for Hillary who don't actually like Hillary, and thus would not be following her on twitter. I know a ton of them IRL. Both lifelong democrats and republicans who will be holding their noses.

That's good to hear! I realize my comment might have been misleading -- Jenny was the only player I follow who follows Hillary, but I knew she couldn't be totally alone. I don't follow the folks you mentioned (though now I feel like I should). And of course there are likely other Hillary supporters in hockey who just don't use Twitter to follow her -- Ben Scrivens, for instance.

And that is a reassuring perspective, re: Trump. Because some of the followers who popped up ehen I checked were...unpleasant surprises.

She's also not a ""celebrity"" in the sense that Donald Trump is, and a lot of people just don't use twitter to follow politicians in that way, probably because most politician's twitter feeds don't contain anything very "interesting." There are a good amount of players who have made their political positions pretty clear on twitter without following one nominee or another.

Or just aren't into following politicians on social media. I'm fairly engaged in politics but still have very, very little patience when it comes to piles of tweets and emails and such.

Yeah, I saw a screenshot of a tweet from Matthew Tkachuk that read "Trump for president!!" but it was time-stamped sometime in 2012, giving it nowhere near the same meaning (although I guess it isn't impossible that he still thinks it'd be a fun idea).

Laz forever.

Also because the Blackhawks beatwriters are more fun when you follow all of them. Some rando congratulated Tracey on her marriage the other day (she's not married) and Laz and Kuc's responses were hilarious.

...is naming Zach Boychuk a really good example? TBH I expected his account to follow Hillary, Trump, Bernie, and even Martin O'Malley and Carly Fiorina (do they have twitter accounts? If so, his probably follows them).

This was the tweet that secured my love for her:

I should mention that a good handful of those players following Hillary also follow Trump as well! That was what taught me to be wary about judging people on their follows. I think Angela Ruggiero, for example, has followed Trump from the time she was on the Apprentice. A lot of hockey players imo just don't strike me as politically aware enough to really classify them as "Democrat" or "Republican" as much as just well-meaning but uninformed on a lot of issues. Some others are probably just following multiple candidates in order to be aware and informed. What's more suspicious is when someone follows every single relevant disgusting Republican politician from the last two election cycles (Brent Burns, Cam Janssen), or when they followed Trump at around the time of his acceptance of the Republican nomination (Brandon Dubinsky), and of course, when they tweet overt Trump support or other gross shit (James Neal, Kelli Stack, the Lamoureux, Clayton Keller).

I don't know about Hillary supporters specifically, but some other players/former players who are politically aware and progressive/liberal/leftist according to their tweets are Mike McKenna (<333), Jakob Chychrun, Devante Smith-Pelly, and Brent Johnson. Also, fwiw, Tara Watchorn, Jonathan Toews, Kevin Westgarth, and Hayley Williams follow Bernie Sanders.

The pens winning the cup + free agent day this year had this effect for me in a hockey context. A really useful event to help cull the herd.

LOL, we're all anon here. No one will know. :D

And yes, that's the one I was thinking of!

Free agent day?

I'm assuming whatever follow bot he uses only picks up on hockey follows (because those are the majority of his interactions). He doesn't follow Trump or Bernie, but he does follow Obama. And he has tweeted things that are consistent with those being his political leanings. I think it's a more "significant" follow than most hockey player follows of politicians.

Canada Day? July 1st? Free agency begins?

Yeah, it's hard with celebrities to figure out where they stand. When I did the same "check" on my public/realname account, where I follow mostly people I know (acquaintances and former coworkers included), it was relatively easy to tell the people who follow both candidates because they want to know what's going on and the people whose expressed views make it clear they're following Trump because they like him. But you're also right that most hockey players probably don't even give a shit about politics.

(I do not understand at all how women's hockey players can support Trump. At least with the dudes, I understand how it's all tied into the culture they've been in since they were very young, but I guess I expect better of women. I probably shouldn't.)

And also Georges Laraque!! Who also tweeted his support of the NBA pulling their All-Star Game out of Charlotte because of the bathroom bill! <3

Well I mean, most hockey players in general grew up white and at least upper middle, regardless of their gender.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. :-/ But you'd think even well-off white women would recognize blatant misogyny. And women's hockey players are more likely to actually know queer people than the men are.

The thing with the women's hockey players is that their twitter accounts are much less followed and less scrutinized than the men's, and less subject to PR control. So if you have this many of the top women's players openly supporting Trump or expressing pro-Trump sentiments (or anti-Black ones, in the case of the Brianne McLaughlin and the Lamoureux), when the women are generally more well-educated, less privileged, living more in the "real world" than their male counterparts... what do the politics on men's side look like? That's why I sort of shook my head sadly when someone tried to connect polls of "college-educated young white men" to trends in the NHL. It doesn't work that way in such a specialized, closed, privileged community steeped in its own particular values and traditions. Mike McKenna has said that he thinks he is in the "extreme minority" of US hockey players (male ones, I presume) supporting Obama (this was during the 2012 election), and he mentioned offhand actually trying to have these discussions with his fellow players before and not getting through to them.

I think the question was rather what people are tweeting about free agency that makes someone following them want to "cull" them. Also, I know the comment specified "in a hockey context," but... talking about being being repellent about a fascist would-be dictator who would deprive millions of people of human rights and comparing that to liking/hating the Pens... :/
