Not surprising as they were dumb names. I'm not sure they were ever actually in serious contention - it wouldn't surprise me if they're just buying up domain names for everything that might possibly be on one of their lists of names to consider and sorting it out after the fact. Domains are generally super cheap.

Na

Allen nonny might have seen the nonny who wanted them to identify at the beginning and changed to be accommodating. Since, you know, asking works.

Or not. They've always been sporadic.

So bent out of shape defending a few poorly written updates about a bush league team with no to minimal interest on meme- which, as far as I can tell, isn't really how anyone else uses this thread. But, hey, if being the righteous angry anon is what gets you out of bed in the morning...

Vegas Vipers, please. I like the alliteration and the league could do with some reptiles.

Everyone on meme thinks everyone else is the angry anon. We need a team-building exercise or something.

I got my notification that the HBB check-in post is up and internally went ! because I completely forgot about it. I've done nothing. I haven't even picked an idea.

My only problem is that I don't think vipers are native to Vegas. Sidewinders and rattlers are, as well as nightsnakes. Which the Vegas Nightsnakes would be quite a name.

Make it the Vegas Knightsnakes and the owner can have the tough Knight name he's dying for.

DA I vote for going out for ice cream rather than anything involving ziplines.

Probably the rock carrying exercise is out, also.

I like ice cream.

Snakes in helmets! The mascot could be something like Sir Slither.

Now that I think about it, a snake costume would be pretty tough to pull off.

Well they want to stand out, right? And wasn't there something about a tough winning attitude? Surely they can't be put off by a costuming challenge.

The Sharks manage with similar constraints.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-12 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
A little bit OT, but this comment made me realize that I only have one hope for the Vegas team: that they aspire to the same level of kitschy wreckage as the early Sharks, only specific to their location and time. I want shitty meme-driven advertising and eye-gougingly neon aesthetics! And yet I am unlikely to get them. :(

Sadly, the '10s are far less glorious an era than the '90s.

I think a lot of people feel that way, though. So many people on r/hockey keep saying it should be the Flamingos and talking up how much merch they would buy.

I'm way happier being the cheerful welcoming anon, honestly. I just call assholes when I see them. Which you are. Accusing other people of being angry in response to your assholery doesn't magically make it not assholery, fyi.

AYRT

I saw that and thought it would be a cool idea, especially with a pink and black color scheme. So much less boring than yet another Hawk or Knight variation, and a unique jersey too! (I was also one of the nonnies wanting teams to be more adventurous with their jersey color schemes. It all goes hand in hand.) I'd hop right on that train too, but sadly it's never going to happen.

Sure, anon. You love being cheerful and welcoming. That's why you and everyone else pays more attention to ~assholes~ and the relative distance of AHL teams to Pennsylvania than the Allen Americans. Really proving me wrong, here.

Re: Hockey Media

(Anonymous) 2016-08-12 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
This is hockey media... adjacent? Anyway, Elliot Friedman, CBC hockey guy, got tapped two weeks ago to be an announcer for the Olympics. He got Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps mixed up and called the wrong winner, and then was so upset he made a mistake the next race, too.

And man, he feels really, really bad about it, you guys.

I grant you some of the drama is thanks to the author who wrote the article - all those one-line paragraphs! - but even so, omg so dramatic.

I think the author is using good technique to adequately make the audience feel like they are feeling what Friedman is feeling.

Somehow, he got the end of the race right. It’s good that he did, because he says, “If I didn’t say that [spoiler], I would have been on a flight this morning and I would have gone home. I would have quit. There’s no question in my mind.”

Oh, Friedge. You're right. He's being very dra-ma-tic.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-12 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
aw, i felt so bad for him though. it was news even in my continental european country, in a "ha ha, look at what this dumb announcer did" way.

but yeah, that's a very dramatic article.

Re: Hockey Media

(Anonymous) 2016-08-12 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel pretty bad for him - he's not a play-by-play guy even in hockey, he doesn't cover swimming, and he was invited to the games to fill in for Steve Armitage, who normally calls the Olympics but who was sidelined with heart trouble. Sucks to be in that sort of situation and then make such a big mistake.
