This is the twenty-sixth post of Deke Dangle RPF Anon, a community for all your ice hockey anon meme needs.

“Okay,” the kid says. He hiccups.

I feel like electrumqueen is one of the few author's works I'll read no matter who or what the fic is about.

This fic was so super heavy on angst (and I appreciate it) and what felt like mutually assured destruction, with a touch of HFN for both Taylor and Mikey at their respective endings. It feels weird to say I enjoyed the fic because overall it's so depressing, but it felt very... real, in a sense. The perspectives all fit together and mirrored well.

My suggestion for reading this is to use the chaptered format, not Entire Work. The story is stylistically built around the chapters is how I'd describe it.

You expect me to be way more competent at parsing Instagram speak than I am. It didn't occur to me that bulish21 was also someone named Bergy, for example.

If you click on the account it says his name right at the top, though, and Bergy is a logical shortening of Berglund? I wouldn't really call that any sort of special instagram speak. It would be like someone having a twitter account that's not their actual name and clicking on their account to find their actual name listed in the profile.

I don't usually like electrumqueen's style, but I think it really worked for this fic, or at least the angsty parts. It gave everything a really disconnected feeling that suited how utterly fucked up Hall was. It stood out a little when things started getting better, though.

I agree about it feeling real. The misery was instantly recognizable. But at the same time, it didn't really engage me emotionally. Some sad fics make me sad too, in that fun way that's good for wallowing in. While I enjoyed reading this one and the portrayal of Hall's self-destructive depression was really relatable, it never really made me sad.

Not really saying that's a good thing or a bad thing, just something I noted. I still devoured it in short order. Possibly a problem there was that I read it whole - my profile is set to use Entire Work by default and I didn't consider switching to chaptered, so maybe that took me out of it a little.

Possibly just a difference in the way we use Instagram, then. I get bored and browse players' accounts sometimes and there are way too many hockey players to recognise them all off-hand, so I just automatically check to see if a picture is tagged/other accounts are tagged in the comments to find out who's pictured.

(And I'll stop there just to be on the safe side, lest this somehow summon more face blindness wank.)

Her writing style is both very difficult for me to parse and really irritating so I usually bail around one chapter in. I don't really notice authors before clicking on fic but I can recognize her pretty instantly.

Honestly her characterizations are what ring less true to me. I've never bought her McDavid one. I thought the Hall one in this fic was fine, but the "only drafted my best friend because I threatened to not sign" didn't make much sense in like, the world of the NHL.

I found this more readable than a lot of her other fic, but I had issues with some of the characterization. As far as I know we know almost nothing about Mikey McLeod (isn't he the one whose best friend runs his social media?) so the fact that his "intro to fandom" is through a fic where he's basically a vehicle for Taylor Hall's angst doesn't sit entirely well with me. I get what she was trying to do but I felt like he might as well have been an OC.

I also didn't quite believe that Henrique had either been in love with Hall the whole time or immediately fallen back in love with his hot mess ass when he arrived in NJ. And Taylor just accepts it? Like "yes of course he loves me! Tell me something I don't know!" But I feel like I never got WHY he supposedly loved him. I think a lot of this was pretending to be ~deep but ended up as 20k of everyone is gay/look at my headcanons for how sad Taylor Hall is.

Ebelre wasn't gay in this one! Think how much angst would have been prevented if only everyone had been happily gay. (Cuz as everyone knows all gay men are compatible)

Yeah, I liked it but kind of went... "Why?" when she mentioned that McDavid had a boyfriend. I don't know why but that's what took me out of the fic for a few minutes.

Plus it kind of annoyed me a little that while Pavel Zacha is mentioned by name about 10 times, he never shows up, and neither do most of the Devils. This felt like Devils fic where she didn't really have to write about the Devils - and I say this while understanding that Hall's POV made this a little difficult because of how he cuts himself off from them.

Maybe this could have benefited from a Henrique POV, so it could be made clear why he's in love with Hall (or, as I interpreted it, why he fell back in love with the supremely messed-up version of Hall). It could have been interesting to see their teammates' views on everything, because I kind of don't buy that they would let Hall self-destruct the way he does, even if they don't really know him.

I wasn't surprised that she gave McDavid a boyfriend, because I know she's super attached to McDavid/Ekblad, but then Dylan and Mitch were dating and then broken up and then back together, and Bennett and Smith-Pelly were flirting with each other, and Bennett had shirtless pics of Bortz on his phone and it was all just Too Much.

It might have bothered me less if she had made someone who isn't all that popular in fandom gay, but. McDavid, Strome, and Marner? And then Beau Bennett! Give me a break.

I'm actually on board for fic where he's the Token Straight. I think it actually would have worked in this fic if she wasn't so obsessed with her preset ships. Part of the disconnect between Taylor and Connor could have been that Connor wants to talk about girl problems and Taylor can't relate! Or something!
