I think it is somewhat true. I know that a lot of the people I used to talk to just don't seem to be around as much anymore, but it doesn't feel like natural fannish migration to me. I guess because (outside of people who get jobs with teams or something) I don't understand why people can't maintain an interest in both the RPF fandom and the sports one. I think they go together very synergistically.

How does that list not have "woobie" on it? Is woobification not a trope?

I listened to quite a few of their shows in the beginning, so I don't know if they've gotten better, but they're pretty much exhibit A of what annoys me about the stats community. And they're really freaking smug.

Outside of the rl/fandom divide that's particularly relevant to me, there's just a lot more hockey and a lot less fandom, if that makes sense. Especially given what feels like a slowdown (stats nonnie disproving it or no), I have one or two fics a week that grab my attention, but there's neverending content and discussion elsewhere. And just simultaneously navigating hockey twitter and hockey rpf twitter is realy freaking difficult. It's easier for me to just unfollow the people spamming tweet porn since there are so many other people to talk to who may or may not understand if they see you interact with the fandom people. There's enough of a difference in communal norms to stomp out what may seem pretty synergistic at a glance.

There's not a slowdown in fic; there's a slowdown in good fic.

I haven't liked a lot of them in this fandom. Not because of the writing, but because I don't think people have done a great job converting hockey into royalty. For example, coaches usually disappear and don't appear as characters, but for some reason parents do.

They can be a nice change of setting without mundanity, but what I really like about royalty AUs is that they usually include marriage tropes I love such as forced marriage, arranged marriage, marriage of convenience. Royalty AUs often have themes that include duty and sacrifice that I like in my fic, too.

Probably my favorite Royalty AU in this fandom is the orphaned "And the rest is rust and stardust" which is Kessel/Bozak.

Maybe because you can have your woobie in any of the tropes, you can have them being a mer-woobie or a royal woobie or a woobie while a centaur. I'm not sure people set out to deliberately write a woobie.

I do now have a mental image of a centaur trying to ice skate which is a crack fic that the world needs.

There just doesn't seem to be the kind of buzz around fic necessary to inspire people. I noticed even the Hockey BB mod is screening comments this year, so I don't have a good sense of who's signed up or how many.

I feel like there's definitely been a slowdown in goodfic, even if that isn't really quantifiable. A lot of the Good authors in this fandom primarily write rarepair porn, the long(er) fic they write is also porn. And it's good! I enjoy it. But there's not a whole lot of new feelsy, plotty fic to get people into the players.

Outside of K/T, anyway. No idea how that side is operating nowadays. Probably fine.

That's not really what I meant. I mean synergistic in the sense that it's half as much reading online and research a person needs to do for twice the use. I get the real life/fandom divide. It just seems like Game of Thrones fans can be really super into Game of Thrones *and* follow basketball or whatever outside fandom interests they have. I'm not sure why hockey rpf and hockey would be more difficult to combine, except, I suppose in a situation like yours where someone is trying to simultaenously do it with the same account.

There is occasionally new feelsy, plotty fic in K/T (linsky would fit this definition, imo) more so than the rest of fandom, but I think the crap fic is also way crappier on that side of things.

I want to write, but I also want someone to hold my hand and encourage me while I do it, and that doesn't seem very practical or available in this fandom. I wish we had some kind of weekly writer's group or soemthing.

I feel like the PDOcast has kind of chilled out a little without Yost (though I tend to like him outside of it); he had to leave because he got hired by TSN. I guess maybe try a more recent episode to see if you like it now? There was one about the Rangers that I didn't mind. Could just not be for you though.

Las Vegas does go all out for the entertainment so I can see the willingness to help the centaurs onto the ice more then anywhere. Or maybe Canadian centuaurs growing up around hockey would be the first to try?

I would be down. I feel like fandom authors were a lot more chatty back when I was just lurking. It's like an entirely different scene now (or lack thereof).

This is how I feel, too. I follow a lot of RL hockey now, but my RPF feels for my team and my RL interests go together, and the RL happenings are what fuels the RPF. RL hockey is the canon, you know?

As someone forever salty about how lackadaisical hockeybb mod is about pretty much everything, I don't think they're a good indicator of fannish trends.

A writer's group like in namespace? That'd be cool. It seems like something you could set up on imzy if you wanted (or DW, but imzy is the cool new toy these days).

Yes! All of that. Also occasional "We must have an heir!" pregnancy plots, which tend to motivate earlier-than-we're-comfortable-with-it sex, too. If there were some way to get that stuff without actual monarchy, I'd be all for it.

There hasn't been much hockey news, so I'm not talking to people about hockey as much in general. And I'm certainly not deeply involved in non-rpf fandom, but honestly talking to those people (or people who do both) is generally a nicer and less fraught experience, at least off reddit. Also, I've had some bad experiences and there are now people I avoid in rpf (not petty bullshit, and not much to do with hockey, but actually bad; also not anything involving forbidden topics), which also plays into overall fraught-ness.

I feel like it'll be hard to make me not love hockey anymore, so that's there to stay. But my enthusiasm for writing fic is ... much less.

Sid/Nate related, I was amused by this clip, at about 47 seconds Nate just smacks his ass into Sid. Then from 106 he chases him across the ice for hugging.

I was wondering what happened there. I'm not a regular listener, but I read some tweet by Yost that seemed to imply there was a split of some kind. I went searching for gossip but didn't find anything so I couldn't figure it out...if he just got hired away that would explain his absence. Far less drama-llama than I thought!

In general I find the PDOcast doesn't hold my attention that well. I generally enjoy it, but I find the stats quite dry and the personalities aren't engaging enough to keep me interested for a full hour.
