If enough people are willing to either play two leagues, with the understanding that one is aimed toward being a keeper league next year, or, simply, enough people are committed to playing again next year so that one of the two leagues remaining is dedicated to players who want to participate in a keeper league next year, we could certainly do that.
My primary issue is that I still have not heard from a great many people. As it stands now, based on the people I've definitely heard from--both new and returning--we have enough for one 10-team league and one 8-team league. There are still 11 GMs from last year who have not weighed in (though, there is one I have spoken with privately who is likely out). That's a pretty big attrition rate. While it's entirely understandable--tastes change, hockey can be challenging to love sometimes, RL issues/time contraints interfere, etc.--it makes it harder to count on having a league to keep anything in at all. While a team can be kept alive and a new GM can take it over next year, a new GM would need to be willing to do that.
Please understand, I'm not trying to be discouraging at all! I am totally up for running a third league with an eye to future keeperism. I just want anyone considering it to think about all the aspects of making it work. We clearly have two GMs who are into the idea, and I'm happy to participate (as I said, I've never done the keeper thing before). We just need at least 3 (with a strong preference for at least 5) more willing souls. ;)
